Ok this might be a little long but I would love an answer if anyone knows. I took my 82 650 apart and chopped the back off and made a bobber, I also took the air box off and put a single filter on each carb. after driving the bike for about 430 miles i had a needle stick and drain a lot of the gas into the crank case. I did a complete oil change again and also took the carbs back off and had them cleaned and rebuilt. The guy that rebuilt them called it a light rebuild. Now the bike will only start by spraying starting fluid into each filter, once the bike is started it will idle like a champ. if I ride it and i am nice to it. it will run OK. but if I ride it like I stolid it , it will have a hesitation every couple of seconds. Please is anyone out there in xj land can help I would love to ride my bike.

Frist thing you would want to do is get a clarification from the guy that "rebuilt" your carbs what exactly IS a "light rebuild". He may have just cleaned your float valves and sprayed some carb cleaner through the air around the rack and called it good 8O get a detailed explanation of what he did. He may have inadvertently knock something loose and block a passage or jet. Did he do any 'adjustments' on the carbs. Did he do the rebuild with the bike or with just the carbs at his disposal? Without the stock airbox (not to start a big controversy...again..) you'll have some challenges to work around. But if it was running good before , you should be able to get back to there again. In order for us to tell you where to start looking, you need detailed info from Mr. Light rebuild...that you can relay to the forum carb-gurus :D

i agree, you need to know exactly what the guy did. could be a combination of problems. sounds to me like the enrichment circuit is not working properly and may have been neglected in the "light rebuild". also kind of sounds like a fuel flow problem or a clog somewhere, does it run better when the petcock is set to prime? is there any rust on the inside of the gas tank? if he replaced the float needles there is also a good chance the fuel level is not correct. again, hard to say without more info about the "rebuild". pod filters shouldn't cause much of a problem unless you've also changed the exhaust.

Thanks guys. first of all the carb guy cleaned the carbs and replaced the needles and seats as well as the gasket around the bowl. he also check the float levels to make sure they were all at the same level ( he said 17mm). again thank you for any info you give in this matter. Its sucks to have a bike that is sitting in the garage. Today is my b-day I would rather be riding then typing.

a dry float setting may not be right. It needs to be the wet clear tube method.

    That can cause problems.

Where are you at? Someone maybe able to help you with this.

Check with the guy and see if he cleaned the jet in the carb bowl. If not try and spray carb cleaner through it and see if it blasts out of the other end. There's a youtube video on what it should look like.

This jet is really tiny, I mean really tiny. a speck of dust could probably clog it. To unclog it you can us a really thin guitar string probably .009 or a high E string, welder tip cleaning set or chacal has the correct drill bit to clean the jet.

I hope he didn't charge you too much for a lite cleaning whatever that is.

    good luck keep us posted.
