Howdy folks. I just came home with a 1982 750 Maxim. It looks good and so far seems to run great.
I'm pretty happy I found a forum like this for the bike; I'm sure I'll be needing lots of help later on :?

Thanks. This is my first bike so I'm not even sure what I don't know yet :p
I'll be spending alot of time cruising the old posts for sure, and after I decipher the byzantine VIN code I'll be getting the manuals as well. I don't even know how to check the oil on this yet, let alone maintain it :(

Just get the XJ CD set and you'll have ALL the manuals for your new bike PLUS the next bike you'll buy (because you can't just have one) You'll need at least two or three. Some of us (Mr Fox) have a different one to ride every day of the week just so we don't get bored and the other bikes don't get jelous.

and yes...WELCOME to the XJ family

    Here is the thread
    http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=15874.html

You do NOT want to have them come apart while going down the highway and find out the truck that's doing 70mph behind you is talking on the cell phone and didn't notice your rear wheel lock up.

Uh Oh, He'll be needing lots of help later on! He must have visited the photo gallery.

Quick guys he's following the bait, now we just have to get him to bite and then we set the hook with the photo gallery and then gently reel him in until he's got his bike cut up and posting questions in the modification section.

Just kidding, welcome to the site!! You will find everybody here is willing to help and know there stuff.

And yes Hogfiddles does have that many bikes that are in his signature.

Well, ... I see it has a LEFT Side Cover.

If you have the Right Side, too ... your ahead of the game!

Lol. The only thing I can see it's missing was the tool roll underneath the seat. Otherwise it's complete.

    Welcome aboard!

We weren't kidding about the rear brake shoes; it's a very common occurrence, and can prove quite dangerous.

    Read this rant: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=24010.html

    And this: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=14581.html

so you have an idea what you're getting into. You'll have some work to do.

    VIN lookup is here: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=14577.html

Looks like a real good find, how many miles are on it? Get some bike info into your signature and a general location in your profile so we don't have to ask all the time.

No, I believe you about the brakes. I'll give them a check before I start going out on it. I'll probably have to ride it down to the shop though.
It's got 13661 miles on it. It came with pretty new looking tires on it. PO said he put them on last year and it doesn't look like he took much tread off them; sidewalls are good. Shifts are crisp, engine seems strong, carbs seem to be doing what they are supposed to be doing in the manner they are supposed to. All the gauges work.
I'll probably jsut do some routine maintenance things along with the brake checks and call it good for a while. I downloaded a manual so I don't have to wait for the XJCD.
The only thing I can't figure out is the steering lock. The key won't turn that way even though it is marked.
Speaking of, I have 4 different keys. One for ignition, one for fuel, one for the helmet lock. Are they all supposed to be different or was this bike put together from many bikes? What's the 4th key for???

It has a bunch of parts from different bikes.
A locksmith should be able to match them I think.

Look at the date code on the tires to see if your PO really changed the tires and check for dry rot on the sidewalls.

The fourth key is for the horn. You will need it for when you change the horn oil.

Oh, wait...........my mistake. The fourth key is the first part for your next bike. This way, you already have a key, and if the bike doesn't have one, you just take the cylinders and key to your local experienced locksmith and he can recombo the cores for you. Just make sure that you get a bike that has the same pattern key for the cylinders. As long as the key goes in, you're golden. If the key pattern is wrong, then they can't do anything about that. There were a couple different patterns that were used, so make sure to check.

Don't let Mike fool ya.....he's got enough parts down there that he could put a bike together for every day of the week, too. :)

I suspected the bike was put down at one point; the brake lever looks like it has a bit of metal ground off the end. That's ok I think. The frame looks good, drives well. If they frankensteined it, it looks like they did a decent job.
