I thought I recognized that bike.

I'm not being anything but honest here, so please don't take offense
You are asking too much for it. With the mileage and whatnot on the bike as well as the market and the economy in the toilet, you either need to hold on to it and work on it (there is a network of these bikes, and I'm in it) or park it.

The price on here and ebay is just too steep. I have an 86 vf700 that has 27k on it and runs like a top, no issues, needs nothing and I can't even get a bite for 1100. Granted, if you do get a bite, or sell it, good on you.

Agree with mcrw... Mine was rideable and cosmetically correct (polished aluminum where it should be, 5 valve carb covers, etc.) but had the 2nd gear problem and a short that would appear from time to time. I only pulled down $750 for it a year ago.

    Also, minor point... It's a XJ700X.

Joe, don't know if you were talking about his bike being an x or yours...it appears that his is an 86 air head. It sounds like you did ok to get 750 out of yours with the 2nd gear issue.

Now just is not the time to sell a bike it appears.

There are LOTS of parts on Ebay these days.
A search for XJ700 will return about 1700 items! ...when I first started working on mine I was excited when I saw 350 items.
Granted a lot of the listings are for way overpriced JUNK but there are parts out there and you just need to be patient.

Also, a lot of the listing that are buy it now....price is NOT set in stone. Throw those guys an offer and they might take it. I've gotten a bunch of parts for less that way.
Worse that can happen is they say NO (or simply ignore you).

I picked up my first 700 airhead for $300 and some time to go get it and swapping a bunch of parts with a friend. the second one I got for a couple few hundred more, upgraded a bunch of stuff on it, and recently traded it for a different bike.

There's plenty of parts available through various sources including people in this forum. I'd recommend keeping the bike, and mothball it if you need to. Otherwise, while you may have steep price on ebay (good for you if it sells), since you said you need the $ come up with a better deal for someone on this site and I'm sure it would go pretty quickly.

    FWIW,

    Dave

Yes, mine was. Agree that this one is an airhead. I was happy to pull down $750 for mine. I started at $1500 thinking the rarity of it would help, but learned that for that price it would have to be near mint which it was not.

The market is down across the board. I've seen posts of guys trying to sell their Sportsters and are not getting any activity. Not even a response.

Yes, if you can get that price you've done very well.

My po asked $1500 and got $1350 out of me.She had 23k and been garaged most of her life, no leaks anywhere, saddle bags and two helmets,-ran ok, but after a few months doing all the "must do's" on this site she hauls @$$.

Of course I prob should not have paid more then $850-$900 to begin with,
but no regrets. After lots of polishing, painting, adding this and that
she looks new. And gets more attention/compliments from other bikers
then I ever expected..........mostly from the harley guy's!

But the resale value is still way to low to even consider selling.

I purchased an 85 XJ700X Maxim about a month ago. It ran but with a rigged switch because the start button lost its connection and needed to be replaced. The bike had about 2,000 miles on it and had some cosmetic damage. The guy was asking $1100 because he though it was vintage. I managed to talk him down to $700 because realistically that's all a "running" and cosmetically damaged bike is worth, and just so happen to be in my price range.

Looking back on it now $700 seems like a lot to pay but for this being my first bike it has been great being able to work on it to see how different it is from my 175 suzuki pe. Its also nice that its so old because this is something I will hold on to after I restore it. The look is sleek, there's no backache when riding it like you would get with a crotch rocket, or a chopper. Perfect fuel saver and I'm glad I bought it.

As for prices on ebay, I have looked and found that one person in particular completely parted their bike out. Besides the cooling system, what is the difference between an xj700n and an xj700x?

Outside of bore and stroke, the X has 5 valves per cylinder, being a descendant of the engine used in the FZR. Apparently the head had to be modified to accept side-draft carbs, because the FZR uses downdraft carbs which wouldn't fit the styling of the XJ.
