I have a 82 650 Maxim, front forks have air assist. I just bough used set, guy said from 650 Maxim, everything is the same, tube diamiter n lenghts, caliper mount, but no air assist. What might they be from ?

    Thanks

The 1980-81 XJ650 Maxim (and Midnight Maxim) front forks are identical and a direct bolt-in swap. However. they differ in their internal spring rates, and the damper rod valving is different, too.

Thanks, just went out to confirm that tube diameters are the same and they are.

Do you know if the air caps from the 82 can be swapped onto the 80-81 forks ?

They can, but the springs are different heights and configurations (and rates) between the non-air and air-assisted 650 Maxim forks, and the damper valving is different, too. All the parts will physically "fit", but I would recommend swapping them out as complete related sets of parts; otherwise, it's hard to predict how the fork system will react and perform with mis-matched parts.
