Hey guys Im new to bikes and I need help:

THE PROBLEM: When ever I try to put it in 1st gear, it grinds a little then goes into gear. It rides and shift smooth through out the gears but I know for a fact that it should be able to accelerate much faster being a 1100cc!!! Its not putting all the muscles down! The acceleration is good in first gear but could be much better at all the others. So I decided to rebuild the carb and replace the clutch springs and discs. What else could it be?

I'm in the process of replacing my clutch discs but the center nut (27mm) is just not budging...

Is it a reverse pattern or regular?! (lefty lossy or righty lossy) I dont believe that the clutch has been replaced before!

Also, I need to replace my Rear Tire, but I have a disc brake on the right side and what seems to be a drum on the left, or is that just the rest of the drive shaft! Does anyone know the process???

you take the brake caliper off. makes it easier to put the tire back on.

the drum is part of your drive shaft setup.

take out the long axle bolt. there should be a spacer also. and your tire SHOULD just slide over a little and roll right out.

that's just the basic procedure. you might have other things to disconnect.

i've never owned one of them so others might have more insight.

A little clunk when you put in gear is normal for the XS/XJ1100. If it grinds some then you are not hitting the shifter hard enough. When its time for 1st gear step on the shifter firmly, it will clunk but thats OK.
The XJ1100s are choked down a little in stock form, they still accelerate good but it can be inproved. Check all the normal stuff like plugs and airfilter and valve adjustment. Clean the carbs then test ride and see where you are at.

yeah, if you shift too slowly it might "grind". you don't need to shift "harder" just faster/more abruptly to get it into first. if that doesn't help your clutch may just need adjusting.

are you following the service manual? i'm sure it will tell you if it's reverse threaded (which i don't believe it is). this may be a silly question but did you bend down the washer that locks it in position?

to remove the rear tire you need to remove the axle (don't forget to loosen the pinch bolt on the brake side first), detach the brake caliper from the rotor and slide the wheel off the final drive. very easy.

Thanx for the advice guys, alot of help.

I just replaced the clutch springs and discs this morning, I was able to get the center nut off by putting it in gear. However, The little pin-bearing "clutch adjusting pin", "pivot pin" seems to be in need of replacement. any ideas where I can get a new one? What is the proper name for it any ways? its about less than an inch long now.
