Has anyone tried to use the OEM Collector pipe (so called exhaust pipe assembly) (4 in to 2) of a XJ700 airhead on to a Maxim X ??. They look identical.. but part no. are different. I have complete xhaust of both bikes off and trying to swap..but dont seem to fit. The XJ700 seem to be a tiny longer in fitment when it comes to Muffler mounts.

Hence i am trying to swap only the Collector(?) and mufflers which are compatible. Thanks

I have swapped the complete exhaust from one to the other.
I'm not saying it's 100% perfect match, but everything lined up and bolts are in place.

Wow thats an achievement mike..I tried to swap the whole exhaust (in 1 piece) was heavy to handle..i could not fit it. Then i checkd XJCD it said header pipes n collector are not compatible. I then tried swapping with same header pipes..still no go. DID YOU DO IT IN Pieces..header, collector and then mufflers..??

Yes. Piece by piece otherwise they take up too much space on the shelf ;-)

AND how else can you clean it properly

I've seen Mike's bike from inches away, and let me tell you.......when he says clean, he means CLEAN.

Designer mike..Thats an awsome job of cleaning. I just had a close look of header pipes of XJ700 and Maxim X side by side..the lips and shape are identical...But the Maxim X pipes are BIGGER in DIA by 1 cm.
Question...Did you find better performance after swapping your exhaust..because of this difference.

I assume you mean 1 mm.
hmmm, I never measured the two side by side and I think I went the "other way" and put an X set on an airhead.

Was the difference on the inside dimension or outside?

It didn't take much to clean them up>>>they were in great shape when I got them. The chrome has to be in good shape to start with and I haven't found a chromer that would touch a used set of pipes.

    Re: Collector pipe compatibility..XJ700 to a MAXIM X (1986).

This morning i had header pipes of both bikes side by side and took a small thread and measured the outside dia..i am sure its between 8mm to 10mm in difference..thats why i asked you if you find better compression or performance..bcoz of little narrower pipes.
I had plans to swap as XJ700 (airhead) pipes were nice without rust but now decided to go with orig pipes, did some metal scrubbing and rust inhibitor primer (RUST CHECK) that will keep it going for few years with proper maintenance.
LOOKING SIDE BY SIDE THE MAXIM X (HEADER)PIPES DO LOOK BIT THICKER ..THATS WHAT LED ME TO MEASURE.
But coming back to my question..do you find the performance is SAME

I'll have to go and measure if I can find an airhead set.
They are double walled....maybe your airhead set has the outer shell removed (hard to imagine)....Do they have the yamaha part number stamped in the bottoms?

But, nope. No difference in performance noticed but at this point I can't remember which bike has the airhead pipes!
I THINK buddy Dave has the airhead pipes on the Blue X.
We'll have to measure and see if I can get a part number off them.

    HI Mike

Yes as you see in my signature..i have both bikes and yes Airhead Xj700 has part no. engraved as 1FG..whereas Maxim X has 1AA. Trust me on this one..The Maxim X header pipes are close to 10mm wider. The picture i took is not close enough to show may be i will try to take one again.

I have a similar problem and maybe we can arrange a trade?

I own a 1985 XJ700N and my collector box rusted out. I purchased a collector box from a XJ700X from a forum member but I learned the hard way that the two parts are not compatible.

Maybe I could mail my X part and you could mail me your N part?

And Mike, I'd be curious to know if you remember how you got your mismatch lined up?

When we tried to fit the XJ700X collector on my XJ700N as one piece, the header pipes would line up but the bolt to connect the collector pipe was off by at least a half inch. If we put the collector on and the header pipes on separately, it was impossible to connect header pipes to the collector because they were meeting at an angle.

We ran out of daylight before trying this idea: we connected the header pipes to the collector off bike and then fastened the collector on. The header pipes end up around a half inch under the exhaust ports. We were going to try to get a car jack to lift the pipes the final half inch!!!!

Of course if we did that then it would mean the collector box would not be flush with the rubber dampener... may even damage the dampener in the process of lifting it forcefully!!!

Might be a whole lot easier and be patient!!!! Trade w me littlegiant!!!

    Re: Collector pipe compatibility..XJ700 to a MAXIM X (1986).

Charlie..My plan is to sell the Airhead 1986 XJ700..the collector is comparatively nicer(almost norust). I was trying to swap the whole system and obviously gave up and i primed and painted highheat black on my Maxim X collector ISO going thru the trouble.

But like Mike did..here is what you should do. Take off all header pipes an d fit the collector with mufflers first to bike. Then mount each header pipe. Install on collector end just at the edge..and now align it inside the exhaust port..now start either tapping or wiggling the collector end.
It should work if you play it right !!

You and Mike make it sound so easy to move bend steel a half an inch by wiggling and tapping lol
