I spent some time on it today. Got the underseat cover finished and the rear fender wire holding tabs welded in. Tomorrow night after work I'm going to start the bondo work and hopefully be ready to paint this weekend.

Good news for me, bad news for the bike progess, I picked up a part time job to fill in my cut hours from my normal job. Good because once I get the bike finished I'll be able to afford gas for it. Bad because now it's back to nights and weekends working on it and I'm out of state first week of july. I'd love to use that time to let the paint cure!

good for you on the 2nd job, but sorry you need it :(

I did some more work on the HEEP's floor today. I got all th patches done and sealed on the inside and about 3/4 of the underside done. I ran out of the window sealant/adhesive which was like a silicone kinda of dealio, so I went to Walmart and picked up some more stuff, but this time I got Liquid nails roof patch stuff. It's like f'n tar. It's messy as hell to work with, one tube doesn't go as far as the other silicone stuff, but I think it's perfect for the underneath. I just need to pick some more up tomorrow. I also got the underneath and inside primed. Then I layed the custom mats inside and it looks great. I can't wait to finish it up.

Why am I putting all of this in here and not my build thread on jeepforum.com

    hahahahahaha

    sorry man

Awesome! Can you send me a copy of the CAD file? We use Soldworks, but I can convert pretty much any kind of CAD file.

CAD file is in your inbox.

I'll try and remember the camera tonight when I get over there to work on it for more updates.

Ok picture update. It was far too hot to do any bondo work it dried way too fast and I mixed it right. So the fenders and tank are now in my basement and will be bondoed in the air conditioning tomorrow.

Got some parts that don't need filler primered

And this is the color I'm going to do. I think it should look pretty f'ing sweet.

My plan is to get it sprayed this weekend so the metalcast can cure completely while I'm out of state for a week

Ok faithful followers the metal work is painted. No pics though because I forgot the camera.

I have a dimple in my finger from the bomb cans! I painted the tank, fenders, seat, side covers, and my under seat cover.

I used 6 cans of primer, 4 cans metal cast ground coat and 4 cans of color coat.

Now the metalcast says it needs 7 days to cure. Which is fine by me I leave for the desert for 5 days on wednesday.

When I return I'll put on the vinyl flames, clear coat it and finally be on the road.

    aaaaahhhhh..... I WANT PICS!!!!

I know what you mean about the pain of rattle cans. I was using both hands and thumbs to do the bedliner on the side of my HEEP :D

Can't wait to see this man!

So I sprayed the metalcast before I left for vacation. Came back and was not pleased. THe blue did not turn out nearly as nice on the tank and fdenders as it did the valvecover. So it got sanded off and reprimed. Just today I resprayed it with rustoleum hammer bark blue. I had hammer black on it before and was pleased with it. I'll get picks.

I painted mine Storm metalic gray and clearcoated it. Been on 6 mo and I'm already tired of it. Flat Black maybe?

So, it just wasn't the exact color you were looking for or the paint itself was just shit? Let me know, because a few more days working on the bike and I might be thinking about paint myself :D

Check out my thread for updated pics.

I think the paint was ok. The valve cover came out nice and it's already on so it won't match so well.

What happened was two things. I painted when it was too humid and went a little too quickly between recoats. I think if you let the ground coat dry then add the color coat it comes out ok. The instructions don't say that though.

yeah I may well repaint this winter again. It's time to ride now. My bondo skills are not at an expert level so it's far from perfect.

Here's an update. Long delay due to life, work, and this horribly hot weather we've had here not making me want to be outside, garage has no AC.

First, here's what the metalcast color was supposed to be:

Here's what she looks like now:

Next up is to figure out why there's no spark. I've got the trouble shooting guide from this site for my next go around.

I've got no power to the TCI, once I run that down I'll get her running and check the exhaust for leaks. Then wrap it and put the seat on.

It'll be running this week. I'm going to the LVCC with it Saturday.

Ok, I was just checking out the pics again and saw the OBX sticker on the HEEP. Where did you go exactly? We're heading up there on the 14th and staying in a house on the Beach for a week. I don't think I can go on the beach that we're staying at, but wouldn't mind checking out some other places close by. I'm not taking the HEEP, but could use the time to scope out where I DO want to go.

SOMEDAY I'll have to make a trip up to meet you in person. I'll trailer the XJ bike and we can take get all 4 XJ's in a pic. Then we can go wheeling a bit if you have some place close by. After wheeling we can go for a ride. I might be ready for a trip like that by this fall. If not I'll DEFINITELY be ready by next Spring. What do you think?

I've been down to the OBX twice. My son's mom's grandparents live down there. That was my first visit.

My second was two years ago. My mom and I went for a vacation. Stayed in a little house in Nag's Head right on the beach on the ocean side.

You can not drive on all the beaches during the summer. You have to go up to the 4wd area. Follow Route 12 (by the beach) North and it ends onto the beach in Coralla. The wild horses up there are something to see. I also saw a H2 buried to the axles in the sand. So air down and take it easy.

I also caught a fishing charter down there http://www.godspeedcharters.com/ He sails out of Hatteras and is a great captain and a great boat. We limited out on the dolphin (mahi mahi) after just a few hours and spent the rest of the day trawling for marlin but only caught a barricuda.

There's no real place close by here to go wheeling. Though there's Peter's Mill in Virginia off I-81 a bit south of Winchester that's about split distance from both of us I think. Could wheel and ride down there for weeks!

Schooter I am usually a bit better at the bondo but it's been so hot here it dries before I can spread it. It'll get fixed over the winter but for now it's time to ride.

I had it running last night. Pipes are wrapped on my back porch and i'm about to head out and finish her up. I need brighter back bulbs and an electronic flasher. Pics tonight of the finished product for now.

Sounds good to me man. I'm down with meeting halfway to wheel and ride. Maybe grab a cheap motel, so we can push the bikes inside and not worry about them being stolen while we are out wheeling? I'll look up where we are going and let you know. I don't think it's that far North though.

I took mine for a spin yesterday with the screamin eagle pipes on. It sounds badass, but I have ALL kinds of popping and cracking, the throttle response is off....bogs if I'm not gentle, and the longer clutch cable I got is still too short, so it engages when I turn left....hahahahaha So, I need to toss in the YICS tool I got, synch the carbs, and then see if I need to rejet. Full update is going to be posted in my thread here in a few min. Not much more than what I just blabbed in here though :D

Ran mine for 50 miles yesterday. No power over 6k RPM and a nice lean surge. Plug chop and white. +2 main jets ordered.

how is it responding when you blip the throttle? bogging or surging?

Oh, and I "wheeled" the HEEP yesterday for the first time. I fond out about a local spot called "the dumps". It's nothing crazy, but it's enough to have some fun and it's local. I only hit it up for 10 min on the way home from work to check it out, but that was enough to completley cover the HEEP in mud and put a HUGE shit eating grin on my face :D

New tires go on today or tomorrow (33" MTZ's) and I get rid of the slicks that I've been riding on.

Next Saturday I'm meeting up with some guys I met on jeepforum.com, but have still yet to meet in person. I'm meeting those two guys and some other guys they met off of militaryjeepers.com and we're going to hit up the dumps for some real fun. I'll let you know how the HEEP performs on it's first real test and with the new tires.

No response. I get it to about 6,500rpm and it's just dead. If I hold the throttle open and push it past 7k it'll start to surge. If I open the choke then it gets better but does not go away compeletly. I did go from a 4-1 to a 4-2 with no cross over pipe and big FLH harley mufflers on it so a rejet is not a complete surprise. I do have a rock solid idle and nice tan plugs when checking from idle and it pulls like a beast from idle to 6,500 then it leans out. My theory is there's not enough fuel when the needle comes all the way out of the jet. Chacal's catalog says +2 jet sizes for the exhaust mod so that's what I'm starting with.

For the HEEP I run Super Swamper STS's in a 33x12.50 they are great and cheap. I'm on my second set. noisy on the street but I've yet to get them stuck and not for lack of trying.

Wait....you don't have an H-pipe? So what did you do just keep the 4-1 header and split it from there or what? I have the stock header and I thought about losing the H-pipe, but wasn't how to go from there or if I would jack it up too much and never be able to get it tuned. Man....now you got me thinking :D

I bought a few 180 mandrel bends and some straight pipe from columbia mandrel bends. Then I hacked the head ends off about 1/2 way down the motor from the the 4-1 to keep the flanges and the expanded ends that meet the ports and rebuilt from there back. I built my own 2-1 merges and got surprisingly airtight welds given my skill level. Just the same I smeared exhaust sealer on them ran it to check for leaks and then wrapped the pipes up.

any chance you feel like duplicating that for a few $$'s? I could send you my slip ons and header and you take care of the rest?

How exaclty to do you test for exhaust leaks?

Nope. I only work on my own stuff.

I tested just the headers by plugging them with rubber stoppers with a bolt through them in two places and another stopper with a air chuck in the other. Pushed air pressure in and sprayed the joints with dishsoap and water like checking a tire bead.

The weld at the mufflers was tested with the engine running.

ah crap.... me too. I have guys at work trying to get me to work on their cars/trucks. I'll help anyone out and give a hand, but with my skillz I don't want to work on anyone else's shit. Plus, it takes me so long to do stuff it just isn't worth it.

No way I can get you to change your mind though? I'm sure you could do a better job than I could..... or do you think that I should just take it to a muffler shope, tell them what I want, and have them fab it up?

I've had too many bad experiances trying to help people out with mechanical things.

I'll stand there and tell you how to do it. I'll even let you use my tools to do it but I will not do it for you. That's been my rules for about 5 years now.

update time. I got my new 114 mains last night because Len is the man!

Put them in, put my new saddle bags on the back, get ready to start her up and the rain comes down.

I did run her in her garage and now she screams all the way to redline in neutral. A definate differance in sound and quickness of revving. I will get some seat time on her over the weekend to see for sure.

No video yet. I can't seem to remember the camera.

I rode her into work today (about 30 freeway miles). Rides great, the lean surge is gone but I'm still lacking some power in the upper RPMs. So the cabrs will come out again and be checked for their cleanliness as would be recommended to anyone else. Maybe need to go up another main fuel jet size......

Ok update time. No video the TCI quit and I lost spark on two cylinders. That is all fixed now thanks to a spare TCI I had. I put about 15 miles on her tonight. Maybe still a bit lean on the top end but no surging, poping or other bad signs so I'll shim the needles again and go from there.

She runs like a cheetah with it's tail on fire.

The harley mufflers crackle and then begin to scream when I wrist the throttle open. A Vrod is about the only thing I can compare it to that I've heard I'll get a video next time I'm over at my shop.

Also got some saddle bags on. Waiting on a fork tool bag.
