Here where I live they dont salt the roads but they do put cinders down and Magnesium Chloride.

I dont know what the effect of Magnesium Chloride are but when the roads dry there is a white dusty/powder residue left behind.

I dont know if there is a physical hazzard to humans, or if there is any hazzard to our bikes by this chemical.

    ANYONE have any Ideas???

Don't know what Magnesium Chloride is, but salt is Potassium Chloride so I imagine chemically they are not too far apart. I'd be wary until I heard otherwise.

I thought salt was Sodium Chloride... Same warning applies either way.

They're both salts. They're just two of the materials used to lower the freezing temp of ice on the road.

They both work in similar ways, and they're both tough on your car and bikes. I wouldn't be concerned about inhaling any, unless you are using a rolled-up $20 bill.

Agreed, they're all salts. What we commonly call salt (NaCl) is "table salt".

    All corrosive.

All can be a road hazard.

Mag chloride is bad JU JU. I work on semi trucks all day. Hardens like concrete too. You ought to see what it does to the frames on these things in just a couple of years. Looks like a bowl of popcorn. Bad stuff. Best recomendation is get it cleaned off as soon as possible after riding through it.

samsr, thanks, that is what I thought!
Thanks to everyone else too, I knew it couldn't be good.
They spray this stuff on the asphalt before the snow and it makes it melt fast.
I wont get that stuff on my bike, but I do have to drive my 06 Camry to work and back in the winter every day.....in the snow and slush.
    I'm gonna miss that Camry,.........

Just get that stuff off whenever possible. Especially on the bottom side of the car and you should be ok. Dont let it sit for too long on the undercarrage. That is what kills the unibody structure. Most people only wash the painted side. (shinny side) They forget hte underside of the car. That is where most of the rust starts. If it starts bubbling the paint on the shiny side, then the under side looks twice as bad. Not sure what the dust from this stuff does to humans after breathing it in but it cant be good. I do know it tastes like crap though. Have a good one . In a couple of months it will be time to break out the bike again. Keep a positive outlook on things.
