Does someone know the ohms reading the spark plug cap should be on my XJ? Also does anyone know where to buy 7mm plug wire for my XJ?

    Thanks, Jim

7mm plug wire is available at almost any place selling automotive parts. Your local hot-rod should would be a be good place to look.

The plug cap, on its own, should be 5K Ohms. If you take them apart to "clean 'em up" you will probably never get a reading from them again, once reassembled. There may be a tiny brass disc that's easy to miss inside there, along with a resistor and spring. (If they're like my X plug caps.)

I found that none of my local auto stores stock copper core ignition wire at all. I was going to check out a couple of high performance or race shops, but ordered Dynatek copper core wire sets along with some other parts from Z1:

You may want to cut off the pre-mounted plug caps from the wire sets and screw on your original plug caps, if they check out OK. Or replace with NGK 5K Ohm caps.

Thanks WeareZilla. My spark plug caps at first measured infinity and then when I took them apart and cleaned them they measured about 13 ohms. I did not see a small disc in any of then but all did have a resistor and spring.

Could you tell me where to buy those 5K NGK caps? My bike is an 86 XJ700XS.

Excellent, you have an X. If you're dealing with original caps, this is the lineup for parts inside:

It doesn't surprise me that you missed the brass discs...I lost 3 before I found out they even existed. What does surprise me is that you get a reading after reassembly. Mine failed after cleaning, or even simply loosening the retainer and re-tightening - I just could not get good continuity inside the cap afterward.

NGK plug caps are available at many motorcycle shops, but if you want to do the online order thing Z1 has good prices for them. If you ask which caps to put on your bike, most companies will tell you the XD05F, which has a bend at the top and really resembles our original caps:

But I would highly recommend getting the SD05F straight caps. They are much easier to work with in the tight space we have available. Pointing straight up also keeps the wires up off the valve covers:

BTW, the orange rubber boot at the bottom of our original caps is nearly a perfect fit on the replacement NGK caps, and I would suggest you swap them over to help keep nasties out of your plug wells. Here is my setup with everything I've suggested to you:

I meant info, not "indo". Also, what type of paint did you spray the engine with? how many miles have you put on since the engine paint job? just wanted to know how well the paint is holding up.

    Thanks.

I used Dupli-Color DE1635 semi-gloss black engine enamel, rated to 500deg.F. I used it on the engine and frame - it is a close match to the original Yamaha color. (I forget what Yamaha called their black, but I want to say "luster" or "lustrous".)

I have not put a lot of miles on the bike since the paint - maybe a thousand. It seems to be holding up very well. There was a fair bit of preparation, though, including industrial strength cleaner, power wash/rinse, and at least a wire brush on everything getting black. Everything black got about 4 or 5 coats, allowing each to dry before adding the next.

Thanks, I think I'll have to give it a try this winter, from your pics the engine looks great. I have done quite a bit of aluminum polishing that has turned out great on mine, used "Aircraft" remover to get all the old yellow crap off then steel wool/sand & used "Mother's" polish & it looks like a mirror.
