I wanted to video some of my riding but the Go Pro stuff is too expensive for me. I bought a key chain video camera off E-bay for $10.00. A 4 GB video card cost $15.00.

I cut a piece of steel I had laying around and drilled a hole so I could mount it with my mirror. I JB Welded a rare earth magnet - $5.00 @ Princess Auto, to the steel.

I used double sided accessory tape to attach a magnet to the back of the camera and then just stick the two magnets together.

I have about 1 hour of video time with this set up. It doesn't work good at highway speeds but for around town and on twisty highways it should be good. Link to a You Tube video I shot the other night. Towards the end I bumped the camera when I re-set the odometer.

    wow never seen these before.

surprisingly good quality, more than i'd expect from a keychain.

this might be my next purchase.

the sound worked fine for me.
it was a little rattly, which i assume is from the actual key chain part. maybe if you remove that it will be a little purer.

Absolutely amazing! Rick is right. The keychain stuff makes the sound kind of buzzy. Maybe replace all of the metal parts with a piece of nylon string? Just loop it over the mirror and you would be in business.

This is one of the reasons I love this forum. The other one I watch they spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars just on the freakin mount! And the quality isn't any better excepth theirs work at highway speeds.

    Rock on XJ'ers.

    Loren

    Very well done!

Very nice. Better video quality than I would have guessed. What kind of batteries does it take and how long are they good for?

The camera charges off the USB cable. It will last at least as long as I have room on the video card.

Yup, that's pretty much what I bought. Mine came from Hong Kong. Even better if it's from the US for the same price. I'm leaving on a 5,000 km trip August 12th to Lake Superior area. Hopefully I can find some twisty roads to video on. Hwy #1 in MN looks like a good bet. Before I leave I'm going to ditch the key chain part and see if that will clean up the audio a bit.

I hear that same "buzz" on the audio of a lot of ride videos, not just yours. I think the little mic on the cameras may get overloaded and distorts, just like overdriving a speaker. I know some people cover the mic hole with a piece of foam to cut down on wind noise. Maybe this will work here also.

    Good find on the camera.

I think the best thing you could do with one of those cameras if you dont mind risking breaking it, is to move the microphone to the rear fo the camera, to prevent the wind noise

polock, try getting some more codecs. Either the media player update or others. I found just installing DivX magically made my windows media player all of a sudden start playing AVI's that it wouldn't before whether I use DivX or not. Betcha quicktime will hook you up too.

anyone try just putting a piece of masking tape over the hole where the microphone is? should distort the sound but it's kinda crap anyway so who cares? and kill most of the whistling over the hole.

You-tube video I shot on my recent trip. This is Hwy #1 in MN. Quality is not great but it's better than nothing.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6x0x0pCUsEg

The frame rate must be making the V-rod look like it has a strobe tailight. The lower I keep the revs, the better the video, but what fun is that?

Did you mount the cam the same way as your first video???
Maybe try to find a spot where engine vibration is not transmitted so easily to the cam...
