I sold a bike I had worked on for 6 months yesterday. An 85 xj700 N. I had 237mi old Pirellis on it (meaning I put those miles on it). A large gent bought the bike yesterday

5'11" 240 lbs. I'm 5'11" 175. Tires were at 35psi. He calls me tonight and explains that the rear tire rolled off the rim at 20 mph or less tonight.

My reaction was one of surprise. I told him the only thing I could think of is that because of the weight difference between him and I, and possbily a low tire (it was fine last week) it rolled off the rim.

I told him there was nothing I could do and to take it to a shop to have it re installed.

    Thoughts????

I don't think that weight difference would do it. I'm much hevier (maybe 100lbs) than the PO of my bike and no tires rolling off.

way low on air and some side loading would do it. Maybe it got a puncture?

I would also suspect a leak of some sort. I hope there is enough of the carcass to look at if it isn't shreded.

I'm 6'2" and 30 Lbs. heavier than the new owner, I've run on a low tire before and never rolled a tire off a rim. my guess, tire was way low and he twisted the trottle in a sharp slow turn.

I had installed 4 tires. Front & rear on Maxim X and Front & rear on XJ700S. I have been riding daily with no issues. If tires have sealed the beads all around the rims it makes me wonder how it can come off rim. Was it installed by a shop?. If you ever seen how bead take its seat on rim..the last part about 10-15cms of it dont seat due to its smaller dia upon inflating to 55psi it seated with a pop sound. I wonder if bead wasnt seated(air would still stay intact) and caused to come off the rim.

This is literally the only thing I didn't personally do.

I could help if it was a mechanical issue, but really, I can't. I feel for the guy, but he did say it felt 'soft' so maybe he should've checked the psi first...not sure

I had no issues when I rode it a week earlier, NONE. Bike was solid.

    Tire Pressures
    Oil Level Check

    Bare minimum Pre-ride safety checks.
If he took-off on a soft tire, ... the tire wasn't the only thing soft!

Feel bad, ... but don't feel Guilty.

As Rick indicated each rider should perform a TCLOCKS check before each ride, the "T" of course being for tires. This did occur on a Penton Six-Days recently to one of the guys over in the Penton Owners Group, wound up being a defective tire bead.
