I've been trying to figure this out forever.

My headlight isn't coming on when the bike is running. I popped off the headlight relay and replaced it with one of the other "metal can" style relays. As soon as I turn the key the headlight comes on. So... I know that the bulb is good. Can I also assume that my problem is the headlight relay?

Because thats what I did. I bought an aftermarket 12V 30A relay at autozone and I couldn't even get the light to come on.

So I opened up the OEM headlight relay and started cleaning and doing continuity tests. Everything checked out fine. It should be functioning but it isn't.

Is it definitely the relay? What else could it be?

Reverse lighting module first. Do you have a wiring diagram? Some XJ modles have a headligh "off" switch built into the starter button, that may be the problem. If your old relay checks good then put it back in and try again. When you turn the key on the headlight comes on right? Does the light go out when the bike is started and stay out?

I'm not sure what you mean by "reverse lighting module"?

I have a SECA. The headlight doesn't come on when I turn the key. Its not supposed to come on until the bike is running.

I've heard a couple mentions of this "headlight off" switch being wired to the starter. Does anyone care to elaborate on that? or point me in the right direction?

With the old relay (that checks out good), the light does not come on at all. period.
