Hey everyone, on my 550 there is about a 1-2 mm gap between the throttle and the starter control. The washer is there and just has a lot of room to move left and right, I tried pushing the end of the throttle inwards and even lightly hitting it with a rubber mallet but it didn't budge... any ideas how to close the gap?

Post a pic, I think you are refering to the gap between the throttle grip and the handle bar switch assembly. There is a gap there for a throttle lock. It can be closed up by installing new grips. Its possible to remove the old one and re-glue it closer, but most of the time you have to cut the old grip off. Then its time for new ones. If the grips are real old they can shrink over time and leave a gap there also. Keep the mallet in the tool box, you don't want to break the plastic throttle sleve. I live in Apex , send me a PM and maybe we can meet and fix it. There is a classic bike show at the fairgrounds this Saturday(Aug21) are you going?

I wish, I have to go down to Wilmington tomorrow and I'll be heading back Saturday afternoon... what time does it open/close? I might be able to make if I get back early enough.

Here's a pic, albeit not great, of what I'm talking about.

Looks like I have the same grips. To me it looks like you are missing a foam ring that fils in that gap. It is about that size. I don't know how hard it was to push the grip on the throttle sleeve but I have had to take the ridges down a bit by using a grinder on them. Just don't get to carried away or the grip will be looser than it should be.

Easiest solution is to go to Cycle Gear on South Saunders street and buy a throttle lock for Yamaha and install it. Cost about 20$, it will fill that gap nicley. You could remove the grip and try to reinstall it but it may not stretch that far.

Are you sure they stock that, the only throttle locks I see on their website are cramp buster styles.

You could pop the grip off and simply shorten the throttle drum a corresponding amount.

If you use compressed air, you can float the grip off and back on without damage.
