    I have a 1983 xj 750 maxim.
When I tryto start it it makes a rattle sound.
Sometimes it will engage and start immediately, sometimes it takes awhile for it to start.
I believe it is a starter problem.
Do I need to buy a whole starter or can I buy solenoid seperate from the starter?

The solenoid IS separate. It's actually just a relay.

Your problem is probably not the solenoid, however. More likely the starter, starter clutch or electrical connections. It could be as simple as the wrong oil.
