My 85 AirJ700 Project

Picked up a 1985 Yamaha Maxim XJ700 for a 100 bucks. Guy had it in a barn for the past 5 years and said it wouldn't run. First bike I've ever worked on so don't be too hard on me. So far this is what I have in the bike.....

100 bucks - for the bike
40 bucks - new battery
20 bucks - lots of carb cleaner
7 bucks - seafoam
38 bucks - Custom Air Intake (pvc pipe, 1 1/2" to 1 1/4" adapters(from back of carb to pvc pipe), and 42mm cone filter)
22 bucks - Chrome Spike Grips
27 bucks - All-in-one Tail/Brake/Turn/Tag light License Plate Mount
21 bucks - Shorty Clear Turn Signals
10 bucks - New Starter Solenoid
25 bucks - Oil and new oil filter
58 bucks - New Solo Springer Seat w/2" springs
2 bucks - Inline Fuel Filter

So around 400 dollars so far. Not bad in my opion.
Here's a pic of it when I got it minus the plastic side covers cause I pulled the wiring out to rewire the new solenoid.



Got a couple things done on the bike. Mounted the new turn signals and grips. Fabbed up a bracket for the new rear all-in-one lights set up. Removed the rear fender and cut off the extra section of frame. Finished up the air intake. Set the removed front fender on the back tire to get an idea of what I want to do back there. Also set the seat on(without the springs) where it will roughly be mounted. Still need to fab an exhaust and a couple other things I have planned out.

I'll update with more pics as it comes along. I'll have lots of stock parts up for sale before too long. I'm also in need of a tach cover if anyone has one.

 

I like it esp. for only 400 that's cool man. Hey think you can tell me where you got those grips at... They match my forward controls.

 

I picked em up off ebay. Just type in spike grips and it should bring em up. I'd buy the ones from US seller cause I waited for a month and a half for mine to get here from Hong Kong.

Thanks. If I could just get it to run right I'd finish it up. lmao My buddy is the head painter for Big Dog Motorcycles here in Wichita, Ks so it should have a pretty nice paint job after I get it running.

 

Well time to update the project thread. I snapped some new pics(crappy cell pics sorry).

Hardtail done with 1" steel tubing and sleeved with 7/8" where it ties into the existing frame. Cut the bottom mount off the stock shocks and welded them in for easy mounting.

New crossmember for fender and seat spring mounts. Used old shock mounting tabs for seat spring mounts. Relocated and 180'd the stock crossmember. Welded 4link tabs for on for the new seat mount. I trimmed up the stock battery box and it will be mounted where the factory air box was(also not shown in the pic)

Sectioned a trailer fender and brought it to a point. Also trimmed the rear tank mount and cleaned up the back of the tank.

The fender and tank are getting bodyworked and painted at the moment and I'll be picking it up tomorrow. Then I'll have to clean up the welds and paint the frame when I get it home. Then it's off to the exhaust shop. Just ordered some new goodies for it including and Avon wide whitewall for the front and a Shinko wide whitewall for the back. I'll post up some more pics of the paint job asap.

Just want to say sweet ride trying to finish mine up hopefully be ready for next summers season. but again great work.

Want to use straight bars on mine, but when I offered up a set of Renthals the controls on the bars hit the tank

I did and have since switched back to the stock ones. Was gonna buy a set of black mini apes, but didn't want to have to buy longer cables.

 

Glad it wasn't just me that was having this problem!
I was thinking of seeing if I could source a similar to my standard pair, but straight, without the rake back. That way wouldn't need to extend any cables or wires.

 

Here's a couple pics of my bike a buddy of mine snagged at a local carshow. I'll try to get some better ones up soon.

 

I dig the intake system you've got on there, did ya have to mess with the jets at all?
