A friend gave me a 1985 yamaha Maxim.

He calls it a "Yamaha Maxim XJ 700."

The title deed just says, "1985 Yamaha."

When the VIN number is run it comes up as a "Yamaha XJ750H R."

When I called a motorcycle shop to get a new battery for it, they said that they didn't make XJ750's in 1985 and that mine is a Yamaha XJ700 Maxim.

The only reason I care is that I want to order a jet kit for rebuilding the carbs. Are the jet kits for a 1985 Maxim XJ 700 and an XJ750H R interchangeable?

    Any insights would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

Read through this. unless you got mix & match parts & engine is should be pretty simple. If you think you got a different engine check the small serial number on the engine, this small serial number should match up with the small serial number on the frame. (The article covers this aswell)

I SERIOUSLY doubt you would need jets for a simple rebuild.
Pretty much all you would need are the bowl gaskets and the float needles/seats.

If you wanted to get serious, throttle shaft seals might be a good replacement and do a close check on the diaphragms but the jets just need to be cleaned.

    If it's an 85, and it's a U.S.A. version then you undoubtedly have a XJ700
You would have two possiblities: XJ700XN (water cooled X) or XJ700N (airhead)....I guess you could have a california version so add the options of a C at the end.

The airhead used the hitachi carbs and the X used Mikuni carbs (MUCH different animals with totally different parts)

Post a photo>> They are easily identified since the 85/86 had a much different look to the earlier XJs (my signature includes links to the 85 water-cooled X photos)

    There you go.

Buy a battery at any major auto parts chain, for half what the dealer will hose you.

All of this was fantastic! Thanks so much. It turns out I have a stock 1985 XJ700N. The frame and engine have matching serial numbers. Should be an easy rebuild. Thanks again.

Bigfitz52, I agree. I bought a battery at Checker for almost exactly 1/2 of what the dealer said.

    Thanks, all.
