This goes to a previous post.
When I turn the key on my 85 Maxim 700 and have the bike in neutral the neutral light is off and the oil light is on. Shift to a gear the oil light goes off.
Neutral light bulb is good. But light is still off. Is the switch bad?
If the switch is bad does that mean that there will be no spark to the plugs even though the motor turns over?

Does the oil light come on when the ignition is turned on? Both should light up. Its possible that the oil and neutral lights are reversed. Try this: turn the ignition on, both lights should be on. put it in gear and see which one goes out.
If you don't have spark while cranking check the sidestand switch, it is probably bad.

    Re: Neutral switch not working?

There is no neutral light on, only the oil light when the key is on and in neutral. Put it in gear the light goes out. Do the neutral switch and oil switch have the same type of connectors?
The engine wont crank if the side stand is down. I am reluctant to buy a side stand switch, it seems to be working.

My neutral switch had to be replaced this is what the symptoms were,no neutral light, bulb and wiring fine, starter would only work with clutch lever pulled in,ie the bike thought it was in gear, ergo knackered neutral switch. However if the switch was grounded with a peice of wire, the starter would work though the nuetral light didnt.I had to remove carbs and exhaust, remove engine bolts to jack up the engine to get at the switch.
