My fuel gauge all of the sudden has started bouncing up and down. I do not know what is causing it to do this. Can anyone help me out. I it is jumping up and then falling down. I does not fall lowering the current level of gas in the tank, but it does jump up by as much as a quarter tank. Help Please.

    Regards,

    W. D.

It acts like some sort of electronic interference or something. It is really quite strange. I have a needle gauge on my bike and so when it jumps it really moves.

Anyone else have similiar problems or issues????

You have a fuel gauge??? Me too. When the engines starts to miss i switch to reserve.

Do you have a schematic for the bike? You might want to check the ground associated with the circuit and maybe pull the sender out of the tank and clean the contacts.

Ixnay on fiddling with the sending unit except as a last resort.

The sending unit itself is fragile and very primitive; Start with all of the associated wiring first-- common problem is the plug you undo when pulling the tank, I've had issues there myself.

Pop your cluster apart and check the wire terminals on the back of the gauge, perhaps one is loose.

I would also say to check and clean the associated wiring/gauge first. If that doesn't help, move on to the sending unit. As Fitz said, it is fragile but susceptible to corrosion. If this becomes necessary, you can source a miniature abrasive blaster from Harbor Freight and, using baking soda, gently clean the unit up. Works like a charm that baking soda does.
