I am wanting to change the drive oil for my maxim. Since I live in AZ, it gets pretty hot. What would be the recommended oil for me? Also, how much oil does it take to fill?

And if anyone can help me on something non-yamaha related, it would help me quite a bit. For some reason my father turned the key on my ignition all the way to the right on my KZ1000 Police and apparently its in the fork locking mode. Anyone know of a way to get it out of it? Honestly, I didnt know the bike had this sort of thing on it so I havent had to deal with it.

I don't know specifics on the 650 but they can't be far from the 750. My factory book recommends 20W40 volume for mine is 3 quarts. Should just turn to left. might be stuck if it hasn't been used in a while. Use some WD-40 or something and try to loosen it but don't force the key it might break. I think most bikes have a head lock to slow down theft, not stop it keeping honest people honest.

Try combinations of pushing the key in a little, turning the key, and turning the forks lightly. After lubing. Don't bind things up with force.

Isn't it 220CC's in the final drive?? Fill until full.

I think I worded that wrong. I meant to ask about changing the oil for the drive shaft not for the engine.

I think I am doomed as far as the fork lock goes. I have another ignition setup for it. I might end up just switching the two.

Also, any recommended brands to get for the drive shaft oil? Thanks.

Yes I read that wrong. Book says 80W90 is acceptable for all conditions. I used synthetic gear lube and the stuff holds up forever still looks like new with many miles and years of service, pricey though.

I use Royal Purple 80W90 gear lube. Why? Because it's purple in color which matches my other bike!

    I just read it - - 200 CC's

Hey, anyone run some Lucas oil (20%) in there??
Supposed to cut down friction and heat, or is it too thin??

Im not sure how many ccs are in a pint. But I changed it and I think it was about half a pint.

    The oil smelled HORRIBLE

I am assuming it has never been changed.

75W90 is just fine, it is what we run in the shop for all yammy final drives.
Fill until it starts pouring out the threads then let it pour until it settles below the threads on the fill spout. Get 1L and you'll be golden for a few changes.

Gear oil smells wierd out of the can, and very bad very fast... you always know when one of us has cracked a final drive in the shop. Granted though, most uneducated owners never change the final drive oil, so you never really know....

    Cheers
    Dave

It was pretty dark. Ive never experienced any problems with the drive. The viscosity of the oil didnt seem as though it has thinned a great amount so hopefully everything is ok. Would it be a good idea to do another change a little down the line to make sure everything is cleaned out of there?
