wiring chop up!

i just bought this 81 550, and i decided to redo the wiring witch was hacked but i guess i didnt know it was this bad, i have spent some time on it and haven got anywhere. the last owner really hacked it up there is sh!t spliced everywhere. i have wiring diagrams off this site but im not to savy with the wires. all i want is the bare minimum for the bike to run, headlight, tail light, blinkers and a simple on-off switch. is there anyone that can help. also there are a few items i cant figure out what they do or where they came from.

thanks man , i think i just solved my problem i bought a full harness of ebay i will keep everyone posted on the bike!

 

Half the stuff is missing that the stock wires went to. You need to find someone with a similar bike and see what you can do from there.

You probly didn't need to buy a complete wiring harness, everything on my bike is new (old recycled) wires except the regulator, starter and coils, I just found out what the bike needed to run and kept that and threw the rest in a box to be stripped and color coded for the next project.

 

BTW that is a 650 or 750 not 550, the 550 is chain driven, check for displacement inbetween the exhaust header towards the top it will say.

 

i was told it was a 550, but now that you say that i did notice that the drive was different. Will that make a differecnt for the harness i bought?

 

I dont see it working... wiring on each model is slightly differrent.

Weelllllll I wouldn't go back to square one the main things you need are the plugs from/to rectifier regulator, pick up coils, tci, and that kinda stuff. I am ready to help you wire that bad boy, cuz I have done it myself, and I am on here everyday pretty much, it isn't rocket science. You just have to remain calm when faced with a can of colorful spaghetti staring at you.

 

At least you have different colored wires, it could be worse. :roll:

There is a post somewhere on the forums for a completely minimum wiring setup with schmatic. You might try to find it. I'd be interested in your leftovers (the connectors mainly).

 

Where does the key factor in on that diagram? do I need more than just the red/white lines from the key?

 

The key in that diagram is labeled on off, basically you feed hot from the battery through a fuse to the rect. reg. then to the on side of the key. Rect reg is hot always. The key is shown turned to the park position on this diagram. Wich is something I didn't use on mine.

Nice job, but you might want to put a strut on the the bottom along the shaft to the drive pumkin for extra strength.

Nice, Wish I had the ability to make my frame look that nice. My welder is a cheap pos. I could have used a buddies but I wanted to do mine all my self... Anyway.. I am working on my wiring at the moment also. I think I have figuered mine out. It isn't to hard, you will ENJOY this thing when it is done. Looks 100x cooler than mine!
