As far as I'm aware, these are the tire sizes for the 1982 XJ750 Maxim:

    Front: 100/90-19
    Rear: 120/90-18

My question is, why is my rear tire a 130/90-16? This is a tire remaining from the PO. I don't understand how a 16in tire would fit on an 18in rim. Am I missing something?

Check the size of your rim. If it's a 16", you should be running 130's.
The Seca uses a 120/90-18 tire. The Maxim uses a 130/90-16.

I guess I should have stated the question differently as: why is my rim 16" when they Haynes manual states it as a 18" rim?

stereomind, your statement clears it up. The Haynes manual must be incorrect, or I just read it wrong. I'll have to check when I get home. Thanks!

The '82 XJ650 has a 16" rear, I would imagine it would be the same.

Obviously a misprint on Haynes part. Ever read a Haynes for Mercedes roadsters, it's translated to the Queens English, e.g prise the cover off,
negative battery to Earth, luggage boot, etc?

Not quite. Even page 183 has it right.

    Tyres - XJ650 G, H, L, LH, J and XJ750 J

    Front - 3.25H19-4PR Tubeless
    Rear - 130/90-16 67H Tubeless

This one is no different, trust me. :) The differences between English and American terminology is on page 272.

schmuckaholic is right, I just for some reason missed the XJ750 J denotation, and figured it was in the 'other' category
