I acquired a 85 Maxim X 700 a few years ago with the intent on getting it fully restored, but sadly, have not had the money to do so. We are moving shortly across country, and I need to sell it to a friend for spending money.

It is in excellent condition, it was knocked over in the garage by the original owner and has very minor damage to the peg on one side. The fuse box is very dried out and needs to be replaced, and the carbs need a rebuild and synching. Other than that, its the standard old bike stuff...fork seals, some cracking on the seat and of course tires.

Kelly Blue Book says its worth $1400, but that sounds WAY too high. Still, I love the bike and need the money. Can anyone offer advice on where to set a price?

that does sound a bit high unless ready to ride and visually pleasing to the eye (imho)...if you got $1400 from a friend for the bike i fear he/she would not be your friend for very long thereafter.
i would think that depending on mileage and how gummed up the carbs are how ripped up the seat is, how much $$ must be spent on parts to get it running reliably, that you are looking between $700 to about $1000 and that may even be a little high. a few pics worth 1000 words
again, my .02...others will chime in i'm sure

Over a year ago, I got $750 for one that was running and rideable. 2nd gear popped out, and it needed paint. I paid $400 for it in non-running condition. Hopefully that give you a data point. The overall bike market is down, so I don't know how that would come into play for a fixer upper.
