Tan gooey residue inside carb bodies

    Ok, so some of us know I'm battleing carb tuning in regards to keeping the bike running the same after I get it dialed in. I do the Colortune, get it perfect, bike runs awesome, 70 miles later it falls on it's face and I have to re-tune it again. I've done it more than 10 times and the best I can relate it to is that all the mixture screws are not even close to each other - after the correct 'burn' color is acheived using the Colortune.

    So, it's been the theory that maybe all the pilot passeges aren't perfectly clean (cause it runs perfect over 2800). So I took the carbs down to the bare bodies to give them a 3 day bath (again) and found a tan colored, semi sticky, easily removable with your fingernail - residue in the part of the carb where the fuel is atomized. on the faces of the butterfies, the upper and lower section of the main Venturi, and inside the intake manifold boots. Its the same amount on every carb, perfect accross the board.

    a local Harley expert today told me it's from 'sealing' my gas tank, but the sealer I used dried a metalic silver color

    what do ya'll think? if it's Ethonal in todays gas should I use an octane booster or fuel stabilizer? and do you think it's related to why the carbs keep falling out of adjustment? THANKS

    I don't think you are going to be a Happy-Camper until you strip the Rack and find somebody that will do an Industrial Ultrasonic Cleaning for you.

    Go case the joint. See what the place looks like and don't let any detail go unnoticed.

    If they are cranking ... cleaning all kinds of jobs ... maybe they need a break.

    It doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand what your trying to explain Yamaman. Basically your saying is, that even after a good cleaning, your finding tarnish/buildup after a short running time, that is attributed to something other than just getting a "Ultrasonic Cleaning" as Rick has stated.

    So aside from me just pointing you to a shop that will ultra clean your carbs just to find them just as gummy 100 miles later, I would think that you have another underlying issue going on here. Your fuel source may be a possible issue, as well as your tank coating. Both are viable suspects. One way to eliminate one of them is to either try a different tank, or "temp tank" for 100 miles or so, or to try a different fuel source, such as a non ethanol supplier, or even trying a high octane blend, and even possibly some MMO and Sea foam in the mix.
