First yamaha 82 xj550

    Ok Hi everyone.

    First off, let me thank all the people who have welcomed me to the site. I've learned alot about my bike thus far.

    Well heres the scoop. I bought an 82 xj550 off craigslis for $350.00 and I rode it home, go me lol.

    Now heres the bad.


    First the dummie lost the key, so he hammered a broken key into the ignition to turn it on.

    Next there were no right hand controls he was jumping the starter relay with a screwdriver to get it started. there were no mirrors, and he somehow cranked self tapping bolts in the petcock. I dont know if it ruined the threading or not.


    There are other odds and ends that are issues but Im sure I will work them all out and be riding very soon :wink:

    My bet is the threads are toast on the petcock.

    Search the threads here for rear brake delamination. Your bike sounds like a candidate for that problem.

    also it sounds like the bike wasn't well maintained you may be in need of a valve adjustment

    rudedog: Where are you at? I seem to recall a 550 Seca around here in that price range.

    Tell me, with all that neglect, did he actually have the title?

    souinds like a decent buy, get some pics up. But deinfetly sounds like that bike should be gone over real good, Because of the way the PO took care of it.
