    What's the compression at?

I have bought rings for the X but never the airhead.
My two favorite parts places (besides XJ4ever) didn't list them as available either.

I doubt any other model will fit since the 85/86 engines had a much different bore/stroke ratio that the older models.

If you haven't, do a compression test and then wet-test it. I'm not saying it's not the rings, but there is a decent chance it's valves not seated from either carbon buildup on the stems (while out of adjustment) or burnt seats.

A new set of rings is probably about $175 plus a head gasket around $50 and you SHOULD get the valves ground (or at least lap them)

There is a +2 set on Ebay and a couple others there....not cheap though.
    Remember, you need (4) sets

Don't buy anything until you do a proper compression test and pull the head to make sure that rings are the real problem.

    Don't just guess!!!
That is a very expensive experiment for sure. A compression gauge is around $40 which is less than the head gasket.

Fitz has a nice write up about trying to take short cuts when your getting a bike back on the road.....read it and reconsider doing a ring job before you even know what your compression is.

There are a lot of other posts about guys cleaning their carbs three or four times before they get it right. Are your diaphragms in good shape? Needles worn? Float levels right? Carbs synced dead nuts? What's your compression again?
If your car doesn't start well do you run out and change the main bearings?
