It's more than "quite nice"......and of course, I'm no charmer! :D

But hopefully everyone might understand the point about the "value of the money unit" not being equal, and how it can change over time, and how that affects the "price" of something (anything) even if supply-and-demand remains completely constant (which it never does); but, in order to make meaningful comparisons, it's sometimes wise to break out the supply-and-demand effects from the value-of-money effects when speaking of "price"....

I, personally think the guy should get the 3 1/2 large, no problem.
There is another way to look at this, Len & you are the only one who would know, what would it cost to build a bike like that from new parts?

Ok, now my 2 cents. It's also considered an antique in Miss., but with any old bike or car that hasn't been used much over several years will begin to fall apart when used now and become a money pit. I personally like the 700 since I own one, but I'd rather spend 3500 on something newer and less likely to fall apart. I don't see the 700 gaining much in prized value by becoming a collectors dream, 2000 is the most I would consider paying for it if I had the money.

That's a very interesting question Wiz, and one that I can't answer, as of course most of the items are not available new...........but if I had to guesstimate, I would think that somewhere around $25 - 30,000 (US) would be in the ballpark.

I would say that unless you have seen the bike in person and have direct knowledge, making suppositions that it will fall apart, will be a money pit, or that it needs seals is rather unjustified.

Hey RobnotBob, I hope I didn't make you mad. That was not my intention, I was just speaking from past experience. Your bike might be the exception to the rule, I just don't see you getting 3500 for it but hope you can get a good amount for it.

No problem Orange-n-Black. I just don't want someone to read that and think that my bike is a polished turd.

Re: FOR SALE $3500 All Original Cond 1985 Yamaha XJ700N Maxim

$2500 max. Sorry, they just haven't gone up enough yet; and the $2500 would have to get "nicked" a couple hundred if you still have the (now useless) original tires on it.

That being said, I keep hoping the "collectibility" of these bikes would start to rise eventually.

Some middle-Eastern gentleman recently offered me $4500 for my '81. I turned him down. He knew nothing about XJs (or motorcycles in general) I think he just liked it because of how it looks.

All it's going to take is 1, 2, 3 deals such as that and we're all off to the races.....

Oh, I know; but no way was I going to sell it to some schmuck who had NO idea what it was. Too much time and effort went into it; some things just don't have a dollar value.

I'm just too emotional when it comes to motorcycles I guess; at least MY bikes anyway.

Fitz, I think you nailed it in your story of the middle-eastern gentleman who offered you $4,500. This is a bike that needs to be seen to be sold… and not just advertised.

    Thanks.

How much did you sell it for? Please be truthful if you respond, because rare definitely does not mean desireable, and you were trying to sell a 25 year old bike for $3500. It seems a little crazy to me, but obviously someone bought it.

Re: SOLD --- $3500 All Original Cond 1985 Yamaha XJ700N Maxi

Sorry about the delay in responding. I’ve been crazy busy with the game of life. I did have another project in mind, but I did not want to say anything because I did not want to jinx myself. The fundamental thought of what I read about and wanted to do, just goes well beyond common knowledge and common sense… I painted a portion of my car with a paint roller. A black car at that! I rolled the roof, the sides of the roof/top, the top 1.5” of the rear quarters near the trunk, and the trunk lid/door. There is way much more to it than that simple statement. But, in essence: 4” high density foam rollers, a lot of wetsanding between coats, and an extreme lesson patience. I put the last coat of Interlux Brightside marine paint on this past Monday. Unfortunately I started with 4 coats of Rustoleum Marine Coating Topside paint. Painstakingly wetsanding after each coat. Then, after 5+ hours of wetsanding the last coat, I came to the realization that Rustoleum “Gloss Black” is not that at all; it is closer to a very dark charcoal grey. But, way off from black. So, I then bought a quart of the Interlux boat paint. The difference in final quality (shine, intense black color) is unbelievable. If someone has any questions with roll painting a car, let me know, and I'll let you know what I know.

Yes, sold the bike. I will contact the new owner and see if he’s OK with my disclosing the selling price. This is just as a courtesy because some people like things kept private. He found an ad I placed here: http://www.cycleclassifieds.us/

I would like to thank everyone here for their input. Especially the technical information.

There has been a number of car-painting w/ roller brush ine the car magazines over the past couple years. I'm thinking about it, too.
