    The XJ series was all chain driven in Australia and Monoshock, so there's the trade off

    thanks time, that bike is awesome.. i have seen some bike that had dual shocks under the seat but im not sure if it was this.. the thing looks like you wouldnt want to ride it cause u want to keep it shiny :D



    kevin isnt that a virago with a 16 inch wheel?

    Its My Virago 500, 1983 the only year made. Monoshock, and yes 16" rear

    thats a very nice bike wizard.. it seems that this type of mod has been done lots - im just curious to know how to do it properly..




    calling mad_bohemian... i have tried to search the board and i havent found this type of thread, i would love to dig into it...!

    Yeah, I did a search too and couldn't find what I was looking for. :( Your plan on page 2 looks to be a good idea. Keeping the shock aligned with the backbone (or as close as possible) is always good, I might add some gussets up near the tank end (green arrow) of the uprights to eliminate the ability of the structure to deform.

    If you simplify the frame shape/structure it is sometimes easier to see the stress points. In your edited pic you can see how you'll have plenty of support at the steering head area (upper LH corner)of the frame. The engine acts as a huge gusset for the lower LH corner. That leaves the upper and lower RH side, with the upper being the most vulnerable since it is receiving the direct force of the suspension. That is an area to keep in mind when thinking about reinforcement.


    Google "monoshock frame" .. there are some interesting concepts out there. Notice how beefy frame support is perpendicular to direction of shock travel. Who knows...you might even come up with a new/better idea!

    It would be nice to have him share the Carb Jetting and Mod-ing that produced all that response.

    im going to weld the upper shock mount under the tank, and the plan is to strenghten the area. i was also concerned about the pivot area, but i didnt think about the engine as a gusset :) (it is that in a ducati!)

    i did google monoshock frame, i found a few pictures but failed to see the things you pointed out.

    call me stupid but are you referring to the seat area in the subframe?

    well i know that youre not so can i ask you to explain? :)
