Our '85 xj700 has stopped working twice in the last 3 days.

Once on Sunday, but with a jump start I was back up and running and has been running fine since....until today on my lunch headed home from work it stopped working. Jump starting it works, but I would like to correct this so I don't have to deal with this issue..of course.

This year I have replaced my battery, stator, rotor, and rectifier.

I have also just replaced the starter about two weeks ago. Not sure if maybe a wire could have become loose or bad...so I though I'd as you guys/gals and see what you think.

    Thanks for your help!

Dying out, as in how do you mean? going down the road? at a stop sign? What happens when you try to start it back up when it dies?

Idled down while stopping and died. When tried to start it it did a faint click, but no luck.

Battery read around 10.5 when not running. When I jumped it, it started but died before I could get a read on the battery again.

your battery should be at 12 volts, when not running.

What would you recommend or how would you troubleshoot this situation?

    two things...test your battery

    Second, test your stator.

Take a multi meter, set it to DC I believe, and start the bike. Put the positive and negative terminals to the battery, and rev the bike to 4k or there about. If your stator is working/charging the battery (which I am betting it isn't) it will read in the neighborhood of 14.2 volts.

Have the battery tested first though. It's cheaper and easier

When I rev the bike, it does jump up to around 14v.

I turned the bike off and the battery read around 11.66v

I let it sit about 30-40 mins and when I read it again it was at 11.58v
