Your description is a little unclear-

Is there a part missing (the external spring), or not enough/too much slack in the clutch cable to properly install, or...?.

When you put the clutch back together did you make sure that the clutch basket and the hub's dots line up? I have had a clutch that didnt move when that happened.
You might also not have put the arm back on the spline correctly. Try moving it back a couple of teeth and see if that makes a difference.
If you lost the little spring that sits on the clutch hub, you might be able to get one from Yamaha. When using aftermarket clutch springs I found out that I didn't need the return spring.
    hope this helps

if you already filled the bike back up with oil, then its ok, just tip the bike over on its side and reopen the crank cover

remember those 5 pressure plate springs you saw when you opened up the clutch basket? those are the things giving you the spring you lack. What you have to do is line up the rotating axle in the cover with the toothed rod behind the pressure plate

the axle is number 25, the toothed rod is number 18

if you do this correctly, you will feel the spring again in the clutch lever, good luck
