    Hi.
I've been rebuilding an 85 XJ600 in Australia and have just rang a supplier of new rear socks, we mostly had chain driven units imported here and they were also Monoshock, the price was $725, almost what I purchased the bike for, I have the old shock at a car repairer who is going to pull the spring off and press in a new bush when it arrives. ($90 for the bush)
I was reliably told (in the tellers humble opinion) that a 25yr old shock will be shot, the bike has done 95k klms, so a lot .
What do you guys think?, look around for an after market unit?, look for someone to rebuild this one (am told it's not rebuild-able, but you guys may know better)

do the Monoshocks of any other bikes fit?

What are my options? ... I'm not looking for charity, but I'm presently looking after my dear old dad due to his ill health and this project is keeping me sane, so I know I will need to spend some money, but that amount for a shock is a bit steep.

G'day Dookus. Not sure where you are in Oz, but I had my monoshock rebuilt at Rad Hard Chroming in Brisbane. From memory, it cost a little over $200, but my shock was off a '95 XJ600s and might have been in better condition than yours. You could give them a try. I believe that some CBR Honda units fit, but they are a bit longer, so it alters the stance of the bike. I see stock units very cheap on British Ebay from time to time; the postage from England is a lot more reasonable than from the US...
    Hope this helps.

    Thanks.
I have found RAD after a long search, they come up as RAD Hard Chroming and it took a bit to realise that I had found them, thinking that Hard Chroming meant they were not a shock repairer.
    Will ring them tomorrow.
    cheers.
    John

Same brand on Ebay is dearer from England and the postage is the same.

Including postage about $350au, which is less than half the local cost.

I fitted a Betor shock on my XJ600 6 months ago and managed to get it for £130 - the company was DK motorcycles in England.

Found out there is a guy right here in Penrith Home town, (outer western suburbs of Sydney) that rebuilds all shocks, SOS Suspension, he is dearer than RAD, but he claims to do a better job, he claims he often has to fix the work RAD has done.
I saw some of the parts he machines up for this type of shock and they looked good.
I save on postage so will work out about the same $
