I am after removing my posts and deactivating my account. I feel that my posts seem to be ignored for what ever reason and its only through searching on other forums and websites can I find the answer..

Yes there have been a couple of EXCELLENT members on here who have helped... its them that I am sad about why I am considering this.. can a moderator either pm me or remove me and email me with a confirmation... I just feel gutted :(

Sorry to hear, that you are disappointed. There is a search, where you can find all your answers. And don't have to wait for everybody's reply.

To deactivate, all you have to do is to logout and don't come back.

I have found the search option on the forum..well let's just say I wouldn't want to use it to find out how to survive a poisonous snake bite in an emergency 8O

Jon, I don't think it has been anything intentional. Consider that it has been summertime (people are out and about doing = less internet time) and I am willing to bet that your questions have been for the senior-advanced XJ crowd...which again reduces the possible / knowledgeable responders.

Hope ya don't go, you have been a source of info for a lot of members here :D But if you must leave I understand...I have pulled the plug on more than one forum in my time 8)

This forum is way more active in the winter months. We all are here to help, offer advice & share what we find when working on our bikes.

Just when you think you have heard it all a new problem pops up. I find it very interesting to see what the other members are up to. You can spend many hours using the "search" option up at the top of the page. Some of the threads that show pictures of certain repairs are to say the least invaluable. From taking carbs apart to changing fork seals. Wonderful information for free.

Good luck and hope you find what your looking for.

yes I realise it was early in the am for those / most in america..... I got really frustrated when I asked for help with carb set up and then with the electrical issue. I got it all nearly done... my frustration was more with the replys like inductions dont work or no replys and loads of viewers.... but I appreciate not everyone can help... sorry for venting above... but I was just annoyed.. anyway.. bikes not done yet but here is a sneak.. so enjoy and ignore my above post

Thorin.. thanks but its still a electical nightmere...

I will ask the question since all can see.. or at least tell you about the issues...

    1) wont start with side stand down... has to be up..( yes I know its still in N but it still wont start or run with the side stand down)

    2) there must be a cut off problem as when the side stand is up... and ready to ride... you put it in gear and it kills the engine.. put in N and it fires up with no problems.. WTF

All electrical issues... and really not a problem.. I am sure they will be figured out soon enough.

Wish my mate was over from CT. (where I grew up...) He would laugh at me and tell me it was a easy thing and then fixed it... arrrgh.. spent 3 nights on this and cant still...

    anyway thanks for the compliment.

Sounds like a sidestand switch failure, for both 1 & 2. If it thinks the sidestand is down all the time, it won't start in gear, and as soon as you take it out of gear it will kill the engine.

Simply unplug the "safety relay" to confirm the issue lies there (the safety circuit.) Then troubleshoot each component. Guessing won't do it.

It sounds like the sidestand switch is always 'open.' You can bypass the sidestand switch (temporarily of course) by plugging the wires that go to it together.

But you need to confirm. Time to break out the multimeter.

    spoke rims on a 700?!?!?!

what did those come off of?

and ya, definitely a side stand switch/ relay problem, mine wont run with the sidestand down in neutral now..

The worst thing to Troubleshoot is the Safety Relay.

The Safety Relay is of a different configuration from a Generic LOAD Relay.

If ... somehow ... A Generic LOAD Relay ... Got put in place of a Safety Relay.

The Bike does what you describe, ... and then some.

The Problem is compounded if any of the Sacety Circuity Switches are:
    NOT connected
    Stuck Open or Closed
    Broken.

rims came off a 1100 virago... they fit perfectly.

the side stand has to be up to start the bike.. thats not normal... and then when in gear it cuts off... but if you just have it idleing and then put the side stand down it cuts off.. so that rules out the always on issue... as they should idle when its down... there is a safety cut off issue somewhere on the bike.. I know it ties into another relay.. I think thats where my issue lies.. and it is a pain in the a55 to resolve.. because I have to trace all the wiring back to that and maybe further.. could even go into the tci or cdi

Here's a bit of info to complicate things: Different bikes had different variations of the safety circuit, some had a sidestand relay separate from the safety relay but not all. Some work by cutting power, some by grounding the TCI unit so it simply can't fire.

Quite honestly it sounds from what you have just described as though the neutral switch is acting up, so the bike thinks it's in gear when it's not. Putting the sidestand down is only supposed to shut it off if it's in gear.

John - I think I may have replied to one of your posts suggesting that K and n filters were a pita! If I caused any offence then I apologise.

If you "Search" "Thundersports", Micarl hosts a load of XJ electrical diagrams and I'm sure your bike is there. Check through and you should be able to identify all the components that were on the original bike (I know yours has been heavily modded).

On the subject of getting quick replies - I normally sneak onto the net at work but "Big Brother" is watching me!

If what you wrote here is correct, then perhaps he has misplaced relays, or wires to the improper relay when doing his modifications? The only other thing it could be, would be 2 relays stuck open/closed and not just one?

ok ok.. problem has been solved... side stand issue sorted.. all is working.. crossed wires going to the TCI or CDI what ever (termonology)
it was a pain in the a55 but it got sorted... all is working and running apart from the oil sender switch.. or pressure switch.. but that could be simple and easy to solve... not worried.. going in for its vehical inspection tomorrow or MOT as its called in England...

BTW ignore my posts .. I was frustrated beyond frustration.. and I really was going to set it on fire!!!!

anyway I appologise for this thread.. but its sorted.. will post more this weekend after its been tested fully.

YES WE have... The upside is when you finally nail that stinkin' little gremlin that has been the bane of your life for a few days, weeks, and you grind his little head into the dirt with insane amounts of relish!
Makes it all worth while. And you get the glory of it (makes you appreciate your ride that much more!).

thanks for helping me guys/gals.... really I feel daft/stupid now thinking of my reaction to the electrical nighmere this bike caused... not 100% out of the woods yet.. but it works.. just some more i want and need to do to make it show worthy.. and guess what I will be doing over winter... stipping her all down.. powder coating her and then chromeing the frame... the paint job will be in a candy apple red flip with silver flakes in it... and my secret ingredient..

hopefully it will come together nice... but thanks.. pics to follow over the weekend after she has been fully tested out and the drive shaft tested... IE must be able to do 100mph without it snapping.. and quick excel and decel.

You know what though? You just learned a lesson you WON'T FORGET.

I've been a technician all my working life (although not motorcycles sadly, they're just my hobby/life) and you never learn from the easy ones. It's the problems that absolutely EAT YOUR LUNCH that you never forget, along with their solutions.

The "OIL" light is a level sensor, not pressure. Has a single lead, IIRC. a FRAGILE single lead, and it's on the bottom of the motor. Need I go on?
