    hey all

has anyone fitted any other rotors on xjs than the oem rotors or the ebc floaters?

i have found that some ducatis have the same inner diameter (64mm) on the rotors. the bolt quantity, size and pattern also matches. only things different are the outer diameter (either 300mm or 320mm) and the offset (most 10mm, on 748 r 15mm)

so. in theory they will fit the wheel.

the problem is the low offset that makes only a narrow space between the wheel and rotor, where the caliper would fit. may not be an issue using the single pot oem calipers, but trying to fit modern four pots would be a challenge.

now the question is would it be a totally bad idea to use a spacer plate of required thickness behind the rotor to get a decent offset to fit a nice caliper?

of course using adapters to fit the calipers correctly would be in order.

    any thoughts on this?

i can use a lathe. where im going to find one is another thing :)

no theyre not for free. i just think this would be a kickass mod.

by the way if its going to be a thick spacer isnt it the same if it would act as an adapter too? meaning i could fit a rotor that doesnt really fit :D

When you take on these sort of mods' you relieve the manufactuer of any safety liabilities, the whole thing would have to be re-engineered.
You add adaptors or spacers, the bolts would be longer, will they be thick enough? if you use thicker bolts, would they take away too much of the casting? & on & on ad nauseam...........

So do I, I have a set of 300mm floating discs which will be going on a XS650 front hub when I do my wire wheel conversion into my XJ550 and will be doing it pretty much as you describe

Any mod like that we do here has to have certification for road worthiness

    nice going kickaha,

can you tell me who certifies the road worthiness? are there brake tests involved?

post pics when the thing is set!

wizard thanks for headsup, im aware that any manufacturers liability is gone after these kinds of modifications. part of the job of course would be to make them good and reliable. theyre my front brakes for goods sake :)

It is quite some time in the future

I don't think any brake test is involved it is more a check to make sure the engineering side is safe

Then when we do the 6 monthly road worthiness check the brakes will be tested

good luck bud.. I cant wait to see what kinda new and fantastic thing you can come up with... all this engineering is just time consuming.. I love my bike now.. but its taken me alot of headaches to get it this far..

i am currently trying to make up a clutch caseing cover... ie remove the old one and put in a perspex window ... with a neon light behind it.

and so on and so forth with the other bits on the bike... I need to bling up that motor.... and I have seen this done before... thankfully I can get help with this bit as I am unsure on the pressures behind them!

There is a guy on the Seca Turbo forum (www.turbomotorcycles.org) that has done an R1 brake upgrade to his Seca Turbo. It is sweet and he says it stops on a dime. I think that it would be a great upgrade. He has the spacer drawings posted up as well. You just have to source the R1 or R6 brake stuff.
