It's my second bike, my first REAL bike. I think I've done well.

She's in pretty rough shape, but that's what I was looking for. She does run.

I'm going to be spending the next several weeks trying to figure out what the hell the previous owner did to it. The wiring is an awful mess, and there are a few other minor issues. Such as this:

The bike in the picture is not mine, but it shows the area in question. Where the red-arrow is indicating, there appears to be a vacuum tube or rubber hose of some sort. On my bike, I have nothing...no hose, no cap...just a little open pipe. The previous owner said it was a "vent." I'm pretty sure he's addicted to meth and an idiot.

Anyone know what this is/what I should be doing with it?

Also, being a n00b...what's a good resource for a manual? Something with lots of diagrams and nice pictures.

    Thanks!

    Welcome to the site !!
That's the PCV vent, supposed to route to the bottom of the airbox.
can be routed to a mini-filter also.

The cheapest manual is used, off E-Bay for as little as $10 sometimes, or the XJCD (3 disc set) for $10.

Thank you sir. I will try to run a hose to the airbox, then, and check out a used manual.

Don't forget the 90-degree elbow with a grommet on it going into the airbox itself, if you don't already have one.

A great source for a factory manual is Len (aka chacal) at xjbikes4ever. Not only can he get you a beautiful new factory manual but he is the go to guy for any parts you need.

I bought a manual fro him and it is sweeeet and legal too! The first thing I do with all my repair manuals is to tear the covers off and all the pages out of the binding and put them in a 3 ring binder. When I need to refer to a page I photocopy the page and use the copy in the garage. If the copy gets greasy who cares. Just throw it away.

Well....... I must admit I do wear nitrile gloves when I work on my bikes. I'm a nurse and therefore need squeeky clean hands when providing patient care. I literally wash my hands when leaving a patient room and again upon entering the next patients room. Every time. Even if the rooms are adjacent to each other. Infection control kinda grows on you I guess.

As for the manuals? I like clean manuals! The factory manual I got from Len is a beauty and I want to keep it that way.

But hey! If you like greasy manuals go for it!!!!

thats the crankcase vent. It releases any pressure from the crankcase (where all your oil is) to the airbox. It allows for variation in the pressure. Basically, It gives breathing room for the crankcase. Sometimes oil will fluctuate up and down the tube, but for the most part should not actually be spewing out into your airbox.

You should probably replace it, or at least put something there.
There's a few pieces so make sure you have everything...

    CRANKCASE>(Pinch Clamp)>(Breather Tube)>(Pinch Clamp)>(90* fitting)>(Grommet)>AIRBOX

OH... and get the Haynes Manual. Some say its cheating because it helps you out so much, but its the best reference that there is on these old bikes.
