majmpd, welcome to the site! Very nice looking bike and certainly should be worth making the necessary repairs needed to get it running perfectly.

By the way, no need to apologize for your English writing skills. I don't know about the rest of the members on this forum but your skills in English sure are better than my Vietnamese or French skills.

    Again, welcome to the forum.

Wow that is a great looking bike! I love the white on it. Painted forks, headlight, etc.

Now onto the police bike issue.

Your in for a lot of money if you want to restore it as a Police model. They typically come with a fairing, hard bags, rear radio box, and of course police equipment.

It is important, before you begin, to know any restrictions you may have where you live as far as having any police lights, sirens, or markings. Right now, I dont see any markings or anything to give you a problem.

The headlight looks like it might have had something mounted to it at one time.

If its pretty hard to find pictures, imagine how hard it might be to find parts. You might just have to turn it into a retired model. Otherwise, I really do wish you luck in this venture.

Super rare bike for sure. Dual front brakes, Solo seat, Painted fenders, Rack on the back. Looks like a cops bike to me. Thats what I like about this forum you get to see things you would never see.
    Good luck on you restoration.

Fitz is the 550 guy I think he will agree that its a cop bike.

Its easily a police bike. Are there any kind of service tags? On my KZP, there are tags on the frame, stating when the bike was in official use, and the date it was first issued. I think its supposed to be removed but I think it is often overlooked.

Fitz totally agrees, it's a cop bike alright.

My first question: did you buy it in Viet Nam, or in France?

How many miles (or KMs) are on it, and could you PLEASE post the model code (the first three digits of the serial number, ahead of the "dash") stamped on the upper right of the motor right by the clutch.

It's definitely an ex-police bike; it's just that most of us who know about these things had no idea there WAS a 550 Police Special. Fascinating.

    hi all
    thank's
i will post the VIN n tomorrow (i don't remember exactly , i need to ask my brother in home . I buy it in Viet Nam ( 23000 kms )
the date it was first issued 1990 ( in the registration document ) , there are no service tags in the bike ( in 1990 ) only a small flag in front (Ho Chi Minh city police departement )
on the Speedometer Tachometer writing in Japanese. There are a little restrictions for having Police Light and Siren , but i can install without problem

Not sure but that sounds like low miles for a cop bike. Thats a great find. Please post more pics when you get it fixed up.

Hey, if you live in Ho Chi Minh, then just go down to the Police Office and ask around if there are old photographs of officers and their motorcycles.

    Old newspapers too.

Once you get a few shots of the correct Police equipment, then compare to pictures of the more popular 750 and it's equipment.

You may have to fabricate the boxes and a fake radio.
Good luck with your project !

the VIN number is : 24J-000145 (this is a XJ550 ? ). There only 23000 kms because it's was used in the police escort only.
i ask the Police Office for the old photographs but they haven't . But i will try the equipment of the FZ750 P
i will ask my brother to take some pics of the instrument cluster
    [IMG]

According to info provided by majmpd, the bike he has is a:

    MODEL NAME: XJ550P (Police)
    STREET NAME: 1983 XJ550
    MODEL ID CODE: 24J
    FRAME ID: 24J
    SERIAL NUMBER STARTS AT: 000001

His bike has a very low serial number.

The gauge cluster looks to be a typical 550 Seca style meter unit, although pictures of the face would be nice.

Close but no. Close examination of the pics show instruments with full round faces like the Seca but the "hump" between the gauges isn't tall enough.

I suspect Seca 550-style gauges but without the fuel and voltmeters, looks like a bank of indicators similar to the 650 Seca. Actually, it looks very similar to the cluster I got from Australia/New Zealand off an XJ550; round faces without the other two "accessories," just an array of indicator lamps.

It looks like it has the bigger Maxim-style rear brake too.

Fascinating. I know I said that before but I'm still intrigued. Nice bike. By all means keep us posted.

Be sure you check your rear brake shoes for delamination as soon as you can.

Maj congrats on your find how did you come to own the bike? One thing I noticed it appears the right front brake rotor is for the left side. The slots are facing the wrong direction. I am no expert,(I don not even own a 550) so you might want to pose the question to them to see if it even makes a difference. The white forks do stand out looks good

Slots aren't "normal" for 550s here; those look like 750 style rotors.

Yamaha liked to match the direction of the slots to the "swirl" in the wheels; and there is NO functional difference in having the slots face "forward" or "backward." Just like it doesn't matter which way "swirly" drilled holes in rotors go.

I just love the white forks and big comfy factory solo seat.

majmpd's Yammie looks a lot better than Ponch's KZ900P. At least I think it's the 900, kinda hard to tell.
