I'm reassembling my motor and I can not get the shim buckets to go back over the valve springs and into the holes in the head. Tapping them in does not help. Its as if they are too large for the holes.

They were removed so I could remove the valves for lapping.

    Anyone encounter this before?

    thanks

They should slide right in , please don't force then in you will dammage the head or bucket. Back up a little and clean the bucket and the hole around the valve spring. Clean with a scotch=brite pad and brake cleaner. Put a little oil on the bucket and they should slide right in. Check to be sure the valve spring is not off center and getting in the way.

Most likely the valve spring(s) are not centered.

The buckets are getting held up immediately, I think before they even get a chance to touch the springs.

I'm starting to think my valve spring compressor mucked up the soft aluminum around the edge of the recession for the valve springs.

Is there obvious evidence of muck-uppage?

You did keep the buckets in order, right? You're putting them back in the same holes they came out of?

Ya, they are in order. I tried them in multiple orientations just in case with no sucess. There is minimal evidense of the mucking up.

"Minimal???" Ahem. Methinks this might be starting to sound like being minimally pregnant.

Just HOW "minimal?" I think we might need a pic of the minimal mucked-upness.

    It might be Dremel-able.

    back in business

Took the head to a machine shop had them plain the head and fix the shim bucket bores. $140

Procrastinated for so long because my original quote at another machine shop was $450.

All put together, engine started right up.

    thanks
