20,000 mile is low miles for a 29 year old bike. But its a milestone for you congrats your bike has 20K on it.
do all of the maintenance on it and the next 20K will be as trouble free as possible.

thanks everybody! yeah i see your point wizard, ill call it art.
i love my commute; 10 mins steep winding road... peg draggin comes standard, then 10mins 50+ winding road, 10mins thru town, 10 mins 65+ highway, then back again. i only get 1-2k miles per set of tires. they always wear to a nice point. got the bike with 12,800 5 yrs ago. also, while were generally loungin around on my thread:
    FOURMILE FIRE!!!

EDIT: I dont wanna be reminded anymore.

it's hard to make out, but the house in the bottom left is mine. my neighbor's is there burin down. the fire ended up actually getting closer too- they were pretty much on my back porch with a fire hose. got lucky.

Lucky you.........Mine had that birthday 31,867 miles ago.

You can look forward many miles of timing chain, clutch, valve lap and
    reseating, etc. Enjoy!

    Bringing my old thread back.

I know it's been discussed (prob. ad nauseum) before, but I'm in the market for new tires...
    Currently:

Whaddaya think? like maybe 30-40% tread left?

    lol

anyways. I like going fast on curves, this is my second set of dunlop d404s. when i first got my bike it had kenda challengers, which seemed like they stuck better to the road, and lasted longer...
this time around, im looking at the bridgstone battlaxes, but ive read some reviews which suggest that they are bad to marginal at road stickage.
wondering if anybody has compared the battlaxes to the d404s and/or the challengers?

sidenote: my odo is gonna hit 22222.2 within this tank of gas. I still have to figure out which scenery I want in the background. Pic to come. unless i forget...

    Bravo, Master of Pillows.

    Here's to 20k more!

Oh, and I've had the thought of a clear engine before. Wouldn't that be sweet?

I had the Dunlop 404's on my bike originally but really didn't care for them I love the Metzeler ME 880 Marathon Touring tires I am currently using. I think they are a much better tire. I got a set of these for my sons bike also and he really likes them as well.

I second the Met 880. I am on set two of them. Stick very well and wear is great. I am also a turn to turn type of ride corners are fun.

I have to admit... I like odometer porn.

    Talk about an OILF!

@andrewlong if i told you where i hail from, id have to kill you. The traffic here is only getting worse.
Unfortunately i was running late to work the day i hit 22222 so no awesome scenery.

I ended up going with a set of the me880s as per oldbikerdude's and theadbrewer's suggestion, as well as some general internet-education. Man, these tires are heavy! Like, more than twice the weight of my 404s. with the 404s, I could just barely touch one side of the handlebars and that would be enough to get 'er to lean to the ground. Next turn (opposite direction), gentle push on the other grip and BAM scrape the other peg. with the 880s, I really have to "push left, pull right" (or visa-versa). First ride with them, I scared myself going through some twisties...
On that note, the 880s are much more stable. There's this one spot in the road on the way to work that's way messed up; On my 440s, I was always prepared for it and negotiated it cautiously. I cant even notice it's messed up with the 880s. They're that stable. The road is like when you cross a major road at an intersection, and the cross-street's wheel tracks are like 5 inch deep grooves that you bounce over... It's like that, but diagonal across the road. And more like troughs than grooves. And in the left lane there's like studded snow tire spin out marks, just to make it worse. 404s would catch and want to throw me down, like really bad tar-snakes. I don't even feel it on the 880s, probably wouldn't even notice if i never had the 404s. 880s stay in the turn easier too. like i could let go of the handlebars in a turn and the bike would stay going at the same angle. or keep the same radius. (i feel like i should experiment). with the 404s i would have to constantly adjust (i realize now) to keep the bike leaning at the same angle.
Sand on the road: 880s slip, but bike stays at the same angle. The 404s would make the whole bike shimmy, almost like speed-wobble.
Dirt/gravel road: 880s suck. I feel like I'm riding on ball bearings. 404s didn't seem to care that they were on dirt.
Wet: Dunno, about the same. Only 200ish miles on 'em yet. I've never had any motorcycle plus rain related mishaps, tho. (Besides, of course, mishaps related to having no helmet visor windshield wipers. and DONT STEAL MY INVENTION).
    Well there's a somewhat complete comparison b/w 404s and 880s.

A co-worker left his lights on on his kawasaki today. Needed a jump. I said
"if you're battery dies, you should change the blinker fluid".
    he says
"why's that? do the electrolytes settle to the bottom or something"
    i said
    "... ... um ... ... something like that. i can't quite remember..."
    then another guy says
"you might need a left-handed screwdriver while you're at it"
lol! i have a muffler bearing joke in the works for tomorrow.

First upgrades I always do on a new vehicle - high performance piston return springs and kevlar brake shoe laces.

BTW, I feel you on the odo porn. As a marathoner, I'm amused when my average mileage on my HHR is 26.2 MPG (or one marathon/gallon).

I pulled over in a parking lot to snap this one:

    70b/365 - 15,000 Miles by oblivion9999, on Flickr

While not a cool number in itself, it represents 15k miles that _I_ had put on it (with a few years off in the middle). Since then, it's got another 11k on the clock. Nothing really 'exciting' coming up.
