My '83 XJ650's petcock leaks slightly on the reserve position when not running.

I would imagine there's a rebuild going to be in my future?

    What is actually happening?

For now, screw it, I don't run to reserve much.

I wouldnt ignore a problem. Chances are its just the beginning.

Fitz has saved me a number of times on here with his advice. Thanks to him I was able to fix my leaky petcock (and a lot of other things) for my ongoing project. He was nice enough to make a rebuild tutorial for these petcocks, just make sure to do everything he says in the tutorial, no shortcuts!!!

Message Chacal on this site to get a rebuild kit.

Thank you, I appreciate the recognition, happy to help. You said something worth reiterating:

THIS is probably the most important "XJ Law" of all! It applies to petcocks, carbs, brakes; just about anything on these bikes you're trying to set right.

Actually, it applies to the whole process.

Since it apparently doesn't leak in the "ON" position the vacuum valve will be good.

Behind the selector lever there is a seal with five holes in it. After 25 years or so that seal wears out. A new one is about $10 from the dealer and it's an easy fix. Just drain the tank and pull the two screws that hold the selector retaining ring on.
