Last night I rode my bike for the first time at night. The first thing that I noticed is that my neutral light flashes on when I release my clutch. Then once I looked closely, I noticed that the neutral light was dimly lit the entire ride. Is this normal?

No. Not normal. Unless mine's broken.

Maybe a few things. I'd check to see that the bulb socket was all the way in and you weren't getting light from some where else. A gauge light perhaps.

    Then look into the electrical.

Ya, that is a little strange. It could be dimly lit due to another light getting into that bulb space. Check it and see!

Could be that your diode is dying.
I've modified my 82 750RJ to run the instrument cluster off of the 82 750J (a single ground wire in one instrument cluster connector) and the only thing I haven't installed is that diode. Chacal sells them but since I don't have an 82 750J to look at, I don't know where that diode is. Its plain as day on the schematic so I know it is there but I'll be darned if I can find info on it's location.
Anyway, without the diode, my neutral light comes on every time I pull in the clutch lever. I don't know if this is your issue but at least it is a start. Good luck!

Most of the XJs have a "diode pack" in the headlight; what diodes the bike has varies how many diodes in the pack, and how many wires go into it.

I vote neutral switch in need of attention; it lives in a rather harsh environment for such a primitive and sensitive device.

I just replaced the clutch safety switch and put LED bulbs in. It is for sure the neutral light coming on and not light getting through.

I wonder if I messed something up behind the headlight.

I think it's just the way it is. When i put LED's in my 400 cluster, the neutral light flashes in every shift all the way into 5th as well when i let the clutch out after shifting. You can see a very faint glow at night in the N LED when it's under load.

I don't think it's anything to worry about. LED's are just so quick to turn on and off, you don't see it under a filament bulb.

That makes sense...LEDs will illuminate on current that wouldn't even begin to light a filament...

Ah, the dim bulb goes on. Nice to know you put LED's in. The devil is in the details...
