XJ550 oil problem

    Hello all, i have an 82' maxim 550 and i replaced the airbox with pods. (please refrain from telling me what a bad idea this was, I'm aware.) I had to also replace the hose coming from the crank case with a small pod filter as well. unfortunately the oil is spitting out through the filter and getting on my leg while i ride. Im pretty confident the oil level is correct so i am wondering if this is an engine issue or just another consequence of pod filters. - Thanks

    you did one mistake... I bet you put that filter on the crank case itself... and didnt use a hose to give it some length...

    if you give it say 4 inches... and mount it away it will be fine... the crank can breath.. and you wont get oil spilling out everywhere.

    yep you are correct i put in on the crank case itself. but what exactly are you suggesting i do, just add some length of hose and have it dangle around?

    Put your pod filter on the end of the hose that used to be there and zip tie it to your frame.

    It pushes/pulls air in and out of the case as the pistons pump up and down (windage)...without a little volume to "breathe" into, it's just pushing oil spray out on every huff....

    yep.. exactly.. put the original hose back on and put the filter on that.. as suggested above cable tie it to the frame and away you go.. no more oil splash and it will be functional...

    btw a tip.. always check that hose at least 2 times a year..that goes for everyone.. it can get blocked up with or without a filter and if it does you can be in for expensive repairs...

    just give it a good pipe cleaner inside it.

    Interesting,.............I have been looking at the kool little
    cones at autozone to replace my OEM breather for no reason
    other then looks.
    Since owning the bike over the last 2 1/2 yrs, I.ve only had
    oil in the air box twice. Both times from just a slight miss calculation
    after an oil change.
    In my mind ( since it's pretty vacant most of the time anyway lol),
    I concidered whether the filter would trap the oil sufficiently to
    keep it contained (with periodic changing of cource).
    At $10.00 a pop I'd hoped to go at leased a year or two between
    changes. But if a length of hose is still required to sustain a clean
    bike then the " kool look factor " just went out the door.
    They have one in a blue that would look just right for my bikes
    colour.
    If the above is correct then I may have just saved some money
    and frusration. Thanks for the heads up jonrms.
    But other opinons would be helpfull as it takes more to convince
    me of a subject then one persons experience.

    All of the above advice is correct. If you mount a mini-pod directly on your breather you can expect to get some oil on your leg.

    The stock airbox has a little "breather filter" on its drain; the crankcase venting on these bikes is very active and getting the breather filter away from the port "mimics" the stock setup more closely.

    Can I just add one thing.. I know you need more convincing.. but just be aware.. even if you get a hose a couple of inches long... you will still have to ensure the breather pipe is up above the crank.. as the crank will spit oil out.. so its a gravity thing.. plus a pressure thing.

    mine is like that.. wink wink.

    anyway .. I am sure more will answer.. this comes from my experiance only...

    can go to better things and I like a spotless motor.

    You may be able to find something that has a blockage sheild in it or fab something up to deflect the oil but allow air. Probably more hassle than it's worth.
