Which exhausts are compatible with my 1980 XJ 650 Maxim? I am looking at one from a 1982 650 maxim right now and they dont' look to have the same curve.

    Any help would be appreciated!

750 will interchange with a 650, I know from experiance but not sure about the 550, or 900. Are you looking into a Mac or other brand? 4-1, 4-2?

The primary and tailpipes bolt up the same, different shape. I noticed this today while cleaning up the pipes on the 750 Seca.

My V&H 4-1 is for a 650. Bolted up except for the need of a adapter to mount the muffler.

Does the year it was made make a difference?

Are you doing it for looks? You can make your own if you delete everything, south of the head pipes. that mickey mouse 4-2 crossover ca be removed, and replaced with 1 1/4 midpipes then if you use tubing, not bent on a muffler machine, (without wrinkles along the inside radius of the bends) have a decent welding shop or any second year drafting student build a gig to hold it all in place so it can removed and reassembeled on a bench and take it to a welding shop and have it welded up: Remove it from the head pipe ends just past the bends beneath the crankshaft and have it all welded up, any way you like. Bar-b-que black it and put the muffler(s) last. (Make sure they are easily removed.. in order to promote anti-social behaviour). Some of the cheaper headers arent worth the chrome they're plated with.
Just a thought, if you want to be original. Caution, if you go too fat or too short on the primary tubes, it'll lean out and run like shick. the diameter of the pipes and the collector changes the tone of the exhaust and the length of the collector changes the volume. Open that is. (Like a trumpet)After its all done, you'll probably need a class on carb jetting. Good luck!

When I bought mine it was $180ish, but I just tried to find it again, now it is like $380ish or something stupid. But it has lasted 13 years, although I did just wrap it in header tape to cover the rust on the front from road debris blasting. Jetting isn't that hard if you are patient and have time to be patient.

All years of the 650 are interchangable. header pipes will work from a 750 maxim. Collector from a 750 will not work on a 650 without modification to the best of my knowledge.

I am very curious as to this answer as I might be looking at an alternative exhaust some time in the future.

The exhaust gaskets (Yamaha equivalent OEM part # 4BR-14613-00-00 or 4H7-14613-00; 30.5mm OD x 39.1mm ID x 5.0mm) are supposed to fit a wide variety of Yamaha 4-cylinder engines:
    81-83 XJ550 Maxim/Seca
    84-88 FJ/FZ600
    92-98 Seca II
    86-90 Radian
    80-83 XJ650 Seca/Turbo/Maxim
    87 FZ700
    85-86 XJ700 Maxim/Maxim X
    85-88 FZ/FZR750
    81-83 XJ750 Maxim/Seca
    83 XJ900

My question: I know that some of the mounting holes/bolts may need to be modified to mount to other models, but can any of the above exhaust systems be considered "interchangeable" for the most part?

Sorry if bumping 14+ year old threads is frowned upon but I searched and this is the closest thread I can find, if a 650 Seca has a 750 Seca motor mounted in it, will a stock 650 Seca exhaust fit on it?

I have a 650 Seca w/ a 75o Seca motor and the aftermarket 4in1 exhaust has a broken ring nut. As far as I cant tell there's no way of getting it off or a new one on without welding (the 4in1 is entirely welded), but there is a stock 650 Seca exhaust for sale locally.

    Thanks

It would seem it should fit.
