I have an 82 xj 650 that i just recently purchased about 2 months ago, it was running fine until i let some jackass ride it and then started having problems with it after that...i figured it was the battery cause it kept shutting off on me ...so i ordered a new battery and while i was waiting for my battery, i changed out my handle bars for some cooler ones...i got the battery and put it in and now as soon as you start it, it revs up like the throttle is stuck wide open...can anyone tell me what might be the problem and how do i fix it :?: :?: :?:

You changed the handle bars. The cable may now be binding. Check the cable for proper length and routing and ensure no binding.

The throttle cable might have been affected when the bars got switched out. Check the cable linkage at the carbs to see if the throtlle is closing all the way. Also make sure the throttle is connected to the throttle and the enrichment is connected to the enrichment

Undo the Throttle Cable at the Carbs end.
Work the Linkage to be sure that the Linkage isn't binding.

With the Cable undone from the Carbs; work the Throttle to check that the CABLE is moving smoothly within the Throttle Cable Sheath.

Re-attach the Cable and loosen the Throttle Control Handle Grip.
Position the Grip to allow slack to the Cable.

If the Carbs are still open and the rpm's racing ...
The Cable is too SHORT for the new Bars.

Measure the length of the Cable complete.
Measure the length of the Cable SHEATH from Carbs to the SLACK ADJUSTMENT.

With the Cable and Sheath in place ... Measure the ADDITIONAL Length NEEDED to allow the Throttles to Close.

Add that distance to the Length of the Cable.
Add that distance to the Length of the Cable Sheath.

Take the Whole Cable (including the Cable Slack Adjustment Bend) to a High Line Bicycle Shop.
Give the OLD Cable to the Bicycle Mechanic.
Tell him you NEED a NEW Cable (Like the Old one) ...
But, with [ Amt. in mm's] added to the total Length.

He has to cut the Old Cable and make you a new Cable with the Slack Adjuster from the Old Cable in place.

    $12.00 - $15-00 Parts and Labor

    Or ...

You can buy the Parts and D-I-Y.

    This means you need:
    Cable
    Cable Sheath
    Cable Sheath Ends
    Bullet Ends
Means to CUT Cable CLEAN w/o Crimping or Collapsing ends.
    Soldering Iron, Flux and Solder.
