I have removed the bar from the brake, I have loosened the tension nut and tork bar and loosend the castle nut. Should the wheel just slide off or is there something else I should do. Thanks this is the first time removing the wheel

There is also a pinch bolt on the brake drum side of the wheel. It holds the axle in place and keeps it locked. After loosening the pinch bolt, I usually take a wooden dowel and mallet, and encourage the axle to slide out. Tap on the drive shaft side so that the shoulder of the axle slides out from the pinch bolt.

As jvswan says, the axel has to be driven right out, this can be difficult if it hasn't been removed for a while, or wasn't greased when replaced.
There was a thread on here where a guy was trying to get the axel out for 2 weeks, hopefully yours will be a breeze.

So I should tap on the drive shaft side where the castle nut is

It's not the drive shaft, it's the axel, but yes & leave the castle nut on, unscrewed to the end of the thread & use a block of 2x4 & hammer.

Getting it back on is the trick....the gears don't always want to align and can be a challenge to say the least.

You're supposed to grease those splines in the hub and wheel when you have it apart. Mine always slips right on, no problem. The grease helps save the splines from contact wear too.
