I'm clueless about HD slip on mufflers.

Would stock slip on mufflers off of an 06 Sportster 1200 custom fit my 82 750 Maxim?

What keeps the mufflers on? If I'm remembering correctly, my stock mufflers have a built in bracket for mounting to the frame...

What's a decent CL price to pay for someone who claims used about 500 miles and is less than 20 min from my house?

    That makes two of us.

My understanding from reading threads from those who have done it (I've toyed with the idea myself, for my own 750J) is that an adapter needs to be fabbed to go between the collector and the muffler, and a mounting bracket will also need to be created from scratch.

i dont know what years have them, but some have crossover ports that you would need to block off.

Yes, 2003 or earlier. In 2004 they changed the crossover design to connect to the slip-on, so that is why they would not work. They connect with a tab to mount to the frame and a clamp at the back of the slip-on.

You would be able to get stock slip-ons pretty cheap as there is not much demand for them. The majority of people move to an aftermarket choice. An other alternative to stock (in addition to the aftermarket choices) is the SE (Screamin Eagle) II's. Sometimes you can run across them cheap for 2003 and earlier.

As far as fit goes, I think you have to do some work to get them to fit.

Joe is absolutely right. Spend no more then a few$$'s on them if at all.
Do a bit more research in to the sound though.
I put screamin eagles on my '85 xj700 and HATE THE SOUND!
They are loud which is what I wanted, but are also harsh and nearly
    unbearable above 75mph.
My next try will be some sporty's which I hope will sound a little better.
I like a low rumble over just plain noise.

I've done a bit of messing around with diff materials for packing
to reduce the harshness and it works fine for the sound, but are
only temp fixes and may end up fabricating straight pipes with
my own design for baffles and packing.
    good luck.

Yes, there is quite a variation in sound. The stock mufflers are very quiet. That's relative to other Harley exhaust options. The next option is the Screamin Eagle Street Performance series which is the latest Screamin Eagle version. However, I don't think they have a 2003 or earlier version. I am guessing the SE's you had were the SE II's. Yes, they were pretty loud and went away once the EPA started getting more involved in noise issues. If you start looking at the aftermarket options, I would say that all of them are loud. My bike had the V&H Straightshots on it when I got it, and I had to dump them because they were way too loud for me. The SE SP's were the right ones for me.

Hope that helps clarify the sliding scale.

I've done this mod and have a nice pair of fishtail pipes with reversed baffles inside. The bike isn't all that loud, but has a really unique sound. If there is a way to upload pics here and if anyone is interested, I could get some closeups.

So 2009 model year would be bad?

Reason is, I recently did some onsite PC work for an old customer of ours... runs a bike shop now. Told him what I was looking for, specified 2003 or earlier. He said he thinks he can get a set of 2009s. Or, it sounds like he could probably get ahold of some Dynas... are those louder than sportster stock?
