Not certain but I doubt the Maxim-X coils will work effectively with the Maxim. The two motorcycles were pretty different beasts. But, there are various after-market coils that will work. But you're into the mounting issue again. Many forum members have switched to dyna coils.

I am a bit confused by your post.

    You have an 85 XJ700N?

The coils you have are from an XJ700X?

    Please confirm.

To the best of my very limited knowledge, the difference between the Maxim-X and the Maxim N coils is found in the boots themselves where the Maxim-X boots are orange and long, fitting deeply into the engine and sealing the shaft so nothing can get down on the spark plug, keeping the well clean.

I suggest posting a more clearly titled question so the Maxim-X and Maxim N wizards might be attracted to answer or clarify and settle any questions

Here are links for two coils which appear to be for Maxim N's

r u sure the coils gave out. there are lots of things that can go wrong to stop the coils from working. not just the coils themselves.

Kinda of what my 550 does, but I am going to check the valve clearances first since I have no idea when this has been done. Then I will be looking into the ignition, if the symptoms continue. Of course I have replaced plugs, rebuilt and sync'd the carbs. It's just a thought. Keep us posted.
