great post. But you gotta be an Idiot to use brake cleaner to clean something and then weld it while its still wet anywayz. Not saying anyone deserved that, but well he definetly had that coming.

I don't think he welded when it was 'wet'. As I understood it, he cleaned with the cleaner, then heated with a propane torch to evaporate any solvents , then welded. Even so... I would never have guessed that that combination - brake cleaner/heat/argon gas - could be so toxic and deadly.

Another pet peeve: burying IMPORTANT info in there along with just so much boilerplate.

I mean, the safety warning reads like so much "do not pour brake cleaner into a glass and drink it off, do not puncture can by setting it on a post and plinking at it with yer .22 rifle, if you bathe in this stuff, it might irritate your skin..." but then buried in there is "cleaner and excessive heat MIGHT decompose into POSSIBLY phosgene"

It's no wonder we're all so jaded when it comes to reading safety warnings.

    Do not drink... well, duh

Do not shoot gun at can... well, duh

Can decompose into phosgene... well, d... wait, what?

That's good to know, and also,

Stick welders make up to 2,000 unlisted toxins and carcinogens, depending on the paint or oils, or what not that contaminates your weld.

Don't breathe the welder fumes at all costs, hold your breath if you have to.

The man who welded the NASA crawler engines together, the engine blocks, piece by piece, gave me his old welding gear.

Why didn't NASA just use General Electric train engines??
That's your tax dollars at work.

not since obama axed it, now its your privately funded and canadian tax dollars at work :)

as for welding fumes....brake clean is dangerous enough (chlorinated or non) without the heat from a plasma arc. dont inhale the fumes.

Holy Moly why didnt he just use MEK or tricoretheline like we used to do then we would drape asbestos fire blankets to keep from burning the place down. Guys lucky to be alive. I do admire him for putting the story out there for others though and thanks for posting MAD Bohemian.

    Damn!
That is insane and very scary. I will definitely be paying closer attention to my chemical warnings also.
Damn bad luck for that guy for sure, I feel bad for him.
Such a small, easily made mistake with a huge life changing consequence. Ouch.
