Ok, so what (ball park) are people spending to restore bikes?

I have a '80 XJ650 that was free, and am hoping to get her cleaned up, road ready, and at least looking good...maybe not looking GREAT yet...for close to $1,000. Is that too much? Is that wishful thinking?

She's been sitting outside under a tarp for 5 years now. I've got the motor to run, but now have to work on suspension, brakes, need seat, debating trying to polish exhaust or get new one, cleaning up the outside of the engine, under the bike, drive shaft cover, etc

A basic resurrection including new shocks, recovering the seat, replacing all the wear items and stuff that has crumbled, tires, brakes, fluids, filters, etc.-- probably right around $800-$1000 or so, so you're pretty much on target.

I'm restoring 3 Maxims 650 and I have a lot of extra parts, I will be selling them. Let me know what do you need and I will give you a good deal. I'm also have parts for a Seca 750 and I need to sell a lot of parts. I'm moving my bikes and parts to a smaller storage/shop.

ok well there's restore and road worthy

    road worthy
    new tires 120 shipped
    air filter 15 ish
brake pad 35 ish (do this)
shocks, found replacements brand new for as low as 50 original shocks suck
this isnt recommended, but i managed to clean out my brake system without buying a rebuild kit, I got lucky, but i think calipers and rebuild kits all together cost 60
stainless steel lines are a 100% improvement, which are 100
progressive front fork springs and seals and oil i think are 100 combined
carb cleaning usually only needs to cost the price of a can or 2 of carb clean, rebuild kits are useless unless the inside is damaged
valve adjustment may require a valve cover gasket, cost of shims, varies how many youll need

and you'll find lots of little things to do

    so ya 6-800 to me,

I concur, I bought the bike for $250 and probably have a little over $1000 into it now. There is always room for improvement though and I am sure I will sink more down the road.
