Carb to engine or carb to airbox? Patience and persistance can get either in without removing the engine. Use the search feature, I know I've read it here before.

    CazMan,

I just pulled the entire induction system off of my 82 XJ650RJ, in preparation of repainting the motor.

To install the carb to airbox boots, you need to slip the boot over the end of the carb. Then deform the boot where it goes into the airbox. The boot has a U channel that goes into the airbox. There is a registration mark cast into the top, so that the boot is installed correctly. Don't forget to tighten the screw at the carb. Start with cylinders 2 and 3 from opposite sides, and make sure that the carb side and the airbox side is done completely, then move onto cylinders 1 and 4. Should be a suitable PITA but it is doable.

How far down in Southern La are you? I am in Vicksburg, Ms. There is no need to pull the engine to install the boots. You do have to pull the engine to install the air box. Just do what Phactory said and you'll get the boots on sooner or later.

I found a dental pick type tool indispensible for getting the boot grooves set in the airbox.

I've found that a few choice four-letter words and an adult beverage or four helps with the process.

Anyway... I've also found that letting the boots sit in the sun makes them more pliable, and remaining calm helps also.

I feel your pain, I posted about this same topic weeks ago, After what OneShoe50 stated, I came to the conclusion that the # 3 boot was warped & out of shape. I bought a set of new boots for around $30-$40 (including shipping) from xtreme powersports. I'm still waiting to get them, I ordered them last weekend so I'm not in that big a hurry since it is winter anyway, have about 50 things going at once.

    Blue Maxim,

I got the airbox out with the engine in and I fully intend on getting it back in with the engine in. Thank god it is made of fairly malleable plastic!
