So last night i got ready to pull off the engine in my maxim 650. I unplugged al wires and took it off all the motor mounts and unbolted to from the driveshaft, but when me and my buddy went to lift it off the d*mn thing wouldnt come, it moves around in the frame but wont come out. I tipped the frame over on its side and tride lifting it back up a few times but that didnt work. anybody have any tips or am i missing something. I left the carbs on, i figured they wouldnt hang it up, and i unbolted the 4 bolts under the rubber piece that connect the driveshaft to the engine, is there something i missed?

Just did this with one of the Penton's. Engine was seized but good with magnesium cases but once I had a little tension on it, a lever in the right place and out in came.

Carbs off is a good thing. All mount bolts (duh) then the motor only wants to come out square.

So I built a "bracket" that lifts XJ engines at their center of gravity, perfectly balanced, allowing the engine to just float on in - or out.

Oil filter housing has to go, lay the bike on it's right side, on some carpet or carboard & lift the frame off.

I had removed the 700 from the frame yesturday myself. My carbs were off earlier.Tried wiggling the motor around but kept hitting something.Noticed the oil filter cover had to come off. Then gripped her good while frame was secured and brute force got it to lean out and turning it front end out first and down to the floor.Man it was friggin heavy.I put the filter cover back on and then lifted it again onto a dolly so it can be wheeled around.Man that really was heavy doing a straight lift.My back is a little sore today.Did that with my snowmobile engine last year in and out and back was gone for a week.I rigged up an elictric winch for that now when I did my 2 sled re-builds.But on the Bike used my body strength to do it.Glad I won't be doing time again, getting to old for that..lol

    GOOD LUCK.

Imagine a square bar under the 4 intake manifold bolts, and the other end is a ring a few inches above the coils (on a regular XJ) It's a "C" shape. nIt works wonders.

ha. thanks for all the replys. i took the carbs and oil filter cap off and the rebber drive shaft boot laid it on the side and then had to work it out with a crowbar for a bit but she came out fairly easy. its just a lot of wiggling and positioning to get these engines out i guess.
