My Vacuum gauges just came in. Who's bringing the colortune?

Also, I will bring the valve shim tool. Factory service manual says set valves before syncing. Check the valve adjustments and bring the new shims with you.

Now we just need a date and place........

My new shims should be in by the weekend. I'll shoot some pix when I open it up to put them in.

Boy, the flash really shows that that gasket was leaking.

Awesome pics, thanks. What should the clearance be? Are the intake and exhaust valves different?

I don't know if I'm in for the carb clinic, but it seems a pretty good excuse for a ride and to meet a few of you guys.

That's ok. Someone needs to be in charge of beer anyhow.

    jandphisted:

    Intake 0.11~0.15mm (0.004~0.006 in)
    Exhaust 0.16~0.20mm (0.006~0.008 in)

When and where will the clinic be held? This is my first bike and haven't ridden it much because of idle issues and weather. Got the bike fixed and now need some fine tuning. I don't have a 12mm color tune yet nor do I think I will be able to get one soon. Depending on when, I might have enough ride time to do a short interstate trip if it is close to the Cleveland area.

Hey, Im back on the forums...when the snow started flying the re-build was put on hold and I just closed my eyes when I passed the bike in the garage. Now the suns back out and its getting warm so I can see the need to fix this bugger up.

I'm in Garfield Heights so pretty much anywhere in Northeast Ohio is good with me. I don't have a 12mm colortune nor will I be able to get one within the next several months. Hopefully I can get the valves done in the next couple of weeks as I have four that are tight. I just have to source a cheap place for the shims, the stealership wants TWELVE BUCKS EACH!! I don't think so! Let me know when and where.

I don't mean to threadjack, and I realize this isn't Ohio, but I went back to a local salvage yard out here that has them for $5 a pop; yes, I do believe they take internet orders. Google for "Stockers".

Thanks for the tip schmuckaholic but I found a speed shop about a mile from my house that had them for six bucks each. While I was there I got some info on exhaust and other mods that I might be doing. Got the valves set right and it runs alot better but the idle is still a bit bumpy and has a tiny stumble right off idle under a load.

Oh yeah- The shop is Krol Cycle in Garfield Heights. The owner is a drag racer and is doing some sick things on two wheels. He has a seven second Suzuki- no nitrous or boost, and just finished building a top fuel bike.
Let me know when and where for the clinic and I'll be there

I am in desparate need of help with my '83 XJ900. I am at wits end and about ready to give up totaly.

When I got the bike it wouldn't run at all --cleaned the carbs and was able to get it to run last fall. I changed the oil and stored it with some seafoam mixed with the gas over the winter. Had difficulty starting this spring so I pulled the carbs again and recleaned them -- got it to start but would not idle only ran with the "choke" on about 1/4 and then with high idle. pulled carbs again after trying to adj the mixture screws with no avail. Now it won't even start and it seams to be dumping gas into the intake. Plugs looked wet and only got a few backfires out of it.

Can someone help a poor fellow out? I am willing to truck the bike to you (anywhere within about 2 hrs of Washington,PA possible farther )and will bring along my meager tools if need be.

I'd be willing to look at the carbs for you if you can hand them over to me for a bit. Did you install new gaskets and floats, etc? I also can install on the bike and sync it once I am 100% sure the carbs are in good condition. I live in Edgewood around Pgh. PM me for details if you are interested.
