Can somebody give me a refresher on the saftey circuit for the side stand?

Motorcycle (1985 XJ700X) on center stand in neutral with side stand up.

Started like normal let it warm up.
Squeezed clutch handle and put it in first gear. The engine died
With clutch handle still squeezed I pushed the starter button nothing happened.

If the side stand relay has failed will the motor stop with the clutch pulled in?

Sidestand relay or sidestand switch (more likely because of where it "lives.")

You are describing a bike that thinks its sidestand is down, yes.

shouldn't it still start fine with the stand down and the clutch in, guys?
I'm usually not one to assume that two things simultaneously went wrong but it seems like the clutch switch is also at fault.

Starts and runs in Neutral - Problem Solved

Thanks for tips. I appreciate all of your input.

I finally got time to work on the "X" this evening.

bigfitz52 your guess was correct. The side stand switch sticks in the position as if it was down. I am guessing there is a spring in side the switch that has broken or is so full of road dirt that is does not work anymore.
